10 FY25 budget questions every CEO, MD, or Business Owner should be able to answer. 1. By how much do you want to grow? 2. What may be impeding this growth? 3. Where is the growth coming from? Which markets/clients/products etc? 4. How will you actually compete? On what basis? 5. What timeframe are you expecting this growth to materialise over? 6. Have you documented, quantified, and prioritised the opportunities? 7. How much are you willing, or able, to invest to realise the opportunities? 8. What will it buy you in terms of activity, people, and infrastructure? 9. Do you have a plan that pulls it all together and aligns ambition to reality? 10. Do you know how, and when, the investment is likely to deliver a return? If you can’t point to documented answers to these questions the likelihood is that your growth aspirations will remain just that. I hate doing negotiations after a long discussion where I'm giving 200% to explain how our brand can drive great revenue and profit for the client. After spending time outlining our strategy, expertise, and the value we bring - the client says "your fees are too high." 😮 Buddy, it's not our agency fees, it's the time, effort and experience we're bringing that has a huge cost'. It's so frustrating when clients don't recognize or appreciate the true value of the work we're doing. Our fees aren't just about the agency overhead - they reflect the deep expertise, strategic thinking, and significant resources that we're investing to drive results for the brand. I wish more clients understood that great marketing and advertising doesn't come cheap. You get what you pay for - and if you want top-tier talent, strategy, and results, you have to be willing to make the appropriate investment. Negotiating down our fees simply devalues the work and takes away from the resources we need to be successful. I'm always happy to discuss ways to optimize budgets and find efficiencies, but at the end of the day, you have to be willing to pay for quality. Rant over. Back to the grind of trying to educate clients on the true value we bring to the table. People often ask me where the name Spiral Orange came from. 🤔 Well, it is simple really. My business came from a conversation I had with a business owner in Sussex. We were having a drink and they said their admin was “spiralling out of control”. I was already looking to start up a VA business doing admin and marketing and took the word “spiralling” and shorted it and matched it with my favourite colour orange and it became “Spiral Orange” the place to come when your admin and marketing is spiralling out of control, so I can get you back on track and organised.
