For some young people with additional needs transitioning from education into employment isn't always easy, but DFN Project SEARCH aims to change this through its supported internships. 💪 Through the one-year transition to work programme young adults with a learning disability or autism spectrum conditions, or both are able to gain valuable skills and experience. Working closely with the public, private and voluntary sector the programme facilitates supported employment internships for young people in their last year of education, helping them to take positive first steps into the world of work. Sarah Moorhouse, Project SEARCH tutor explained more: "Supported internships are life changing for both the young person and their families as they open up a world of choice and opportunity. "By accessing three, fully immersive, work placements interns gain valuable transferrable skills, knowledge and behaviours to ensure that they are successful in the world of work. "Furthermore, employers can gain a deeper understanding of inclusion and welcome a previously untapped pool of employees who bring both diversity and different thinking to their workplace. Nationally, only 4.6% of people with a disability known to their Local Authority, are in employment, compared to over 70% of DFN Project SEARCH Graduates. "The Burnley site, based in The Calico Group, has a success rate of 100%, meaning all of our 2022/23 cohort are now in sustainable and meaningful employment." 💬 Read the full feature on Project SEARCH in our latest InBusiness Burnley article: ➡️ 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eK39A9TQ 🔗 ⬅️ #burnley #lancashire #emplyment #brilliantburnley #disability #inclusion #learningdifficulties #internships #austism

What do you know about Flexible Supported Employment Pathways? Charlie, who runs the autism base in Llanishen, talks about the benefits of the FSEP scheme for young people with an autism diagnosis. Unfortunately, many young people with Additional Learning Needs do not have access to work experience and therefore are not prepared to join the workforce. But with a bit of training and support employers can access a whole new pool of potential talent that is being overlooked. National supported internships are one example of a flexible supported employment pathway that young people with ALN can take. We will be sharing more about this tomorrow for National Supported Internship Day! Today (27 March) is #NationalSupportedInternshipDay! Did you know that Supported Internship host employers have reported increases in staff morale and even drop offs in sickness rates, as well as improved processes due to interns suggesting new ways of working? For those not familiar with Supported internships, they are work-based study programmes tailored for young people, aged 16 to 24, with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). They can help young people with an Education, Health and Care Plan develop vital employment skills, as well as build their self-esteem and confidence. Warwickshire County Council is working to improve employment opportunities for young people with SEND and in 2023 launched new guidance to help local employers and education providers understand more about supported internships and how to develop a successful programme. There are also new guides available for young people and parents and carers, as well as an Easy Read guide. You can find all guides and more information at: https://lnkd.in/eEcrcr-4 #NSID2024 #SupportedInternships #Internships #NSID #InclusiveEmployment #Inclusivity

SUPPORTED INTERNSHIPS FORUM – MONDAY 9 DECEMBER (9.15AM-10.45AM) 📢 WE NEED YOUR HELP! Does your business want to encourage inclusion and support disability in the workplace?🧑🤝🧑 We’re looking for local companies and training providers to support this programme and are hosting a forum on Monday 9 December (9.15am-10.45am) at Wrekin Housing Trust so you can find out more about Supported Internships. Places are limited so please call Mike Thomas on 07813 409442 or email [email protected] to book your place or to find out more. The Supported Internships programme is a government initiative (DfE) to support young people with SEND (special educational needs and disability) and move them closer to the workplace by giving them valuable skills and practical experience. Internships last from 6 to 12 months and typically, the young person will spend part of the week in training and the rest of it in the workplace. The placements are unpaid, so there are no financial obligations to you. It is fantastic way to give the young person practical experience of the workplace and move them closer to the job market. We know employers want to help with supporting disability in the workplace, but sometimes don’t know how best to go about this so it would be great to speak to businesses about the scheme. #supportedinternships #business #employment #support #disablity #skills

During the supported internship. 🫱🏾🫲🏽Employers will be supported by the learning provider throughout the supported internship. 📈🗣️Employers should be involved in reflecting on a supported intern’s progress, both informally through conversations with a job coach and by more formal contributions to a review process. 🪜Supporting the development of the supported intern is a shared responsibility between staff from the learning provider, including the job coach, and the employer and relies on effective communication. 💡Job coaches may need to negotiate with employers where they feel that a supported intern needs new challenges and could be offered greater responsibilities. Equally, it may be necessary for a job coach to agree on a reduced or different role for a supported intern where appropriate. 🚩Employers are encouraged to flag learning opportunities that would enable the supported intern to extend their range of responsibilities. https://lnkd.in/gxU8kcpa

More Supported Interns! This time featuring learners from our Work Matters Course based at Norse Group. A huge thank you to everyone at Norse for hosting us and providing placement opportunities, and to our local employers who offer a variety of placement choices, including Co-Op, Holiday Inn Norwich North, Airways Diner, YMCA, Norwich Homeless Support and many more. #NationalSupportedInternshipDay #NSID2024 Meet some of our students undertaking their Supported Internship based at Norse Group, working hard and developing their employability skills. The programme gives learners the chance to learn in real working environments and kick start their career. We see huge changes in confidence, but don’t just take our word for it, here is what a couple of our students think: “Work Matter’s has given me a chance to try out different jobs, such as Admin which I’ve always wanted to do. I’m proud of having 100% attendance, by having early nights and waking up early in the mornings. My advice is to get an early timed bus otherwise you’ll be running late and bringing a packed lunch with you. It is an amazing course to find a job” Erin “It’s a challenge going from 3 to 5 days per week, so make sure you go to bed early and not sitting up all night gaming so u are ready for the next day. To start with I didn’t know where to put tools away, but someone showed me and I’ve learnt just to try your best and work hard in everything. In the future I want to have a job and learn how to drive so can drive places instead of getting the bus” Tyler Find out more about City College Norwich’s supported internship programmes “Work Matters” at Work Matters - Supported Internships | City College Norwich (ccn.ac.uk) #NationalSupportedInternshipDay #NSID2024
