A Transfer on Death (TOD) can be a powerful tool, but they should be part of a comprehensive estate plan to ensure everything aligns as intended. TOD accounts can be a smart way to avoid probate and streamline estate planning, especially for smaller estates. However, there's a potential downside: if beneficiaries aren't aware of all TOD accounts, they could go unclaimed. It's crucial to keep a record of TOD accounts and share it with your estate executor to avoid confusion later. #tod #transferondeath #estateplanning #estateplan #legacy #legacyplanning #assetprotection #estates #estateadministration #planningahead #executor #benficiaries

Transfer on Death (TOD) accounts offer a way to transfer assets directly to beneficiaries without the need for probate, making the process quick and private. They are simple to set up and involve filling out a form from your financial institution, making them a cost-effective estate planning tool. However, TOD accounts come with potential drawbacks. They might not cover final expenses if there aren’t enough assets left in the estate. They also lack the ability to name contingent beneficiaries, which means if the primary beneficiary dies first, the assets could still go through probate. Additionally, TOD accounts do not protect beneficiaries from creditors and can lead to unintended disinheritance in joint accounts. Consulting with an estate planning professional is recommended to determine if TOD accounts are suitable for your needs.
