🎓📚 India is making waves in the education sector with an allocation of nearly ₹73,500 crore in the recent Union Budget — the highest in the country's history! But, despite this ambitious funding, challenges persist. With an unspent balance of ₹7,000 crore from the previous budget, there’s an urgent need to channel resources effectively and drive impactful change – a responsibility that some exceptional startups have come to shoulder. While the likes of BYJU'S and upGrad continue to be at the forefront, let us look at 3 trailblazing startups reshaping the country’s educational landscape in line with UNSDG 4: Quality Education! 🌾 Hippocampus Learning Centres: Founded by Umesh Malhotra, a former Infosys employee, Hippocampus strives to provide quality early childhood education to underprivileged children in rural India. Established in 2011, this social enterprise has secured over ₹20 crore in venture capital backing and focuses on three years of pre-school education before grade 1. ⌨ Thinkerbell Labs: Co-founded by Aman Srivastava, Sanskriti Dawle, Dilip Ramesh, and Saif Shaikh, Thinkerbell Labs is breaking barriers for the visually impaired. Their innovative device, Annie — the world’s first self-learning Braille literacy tool — acts as a personal tutor, helping visually impaired students master Braille. Annie’s success, with accolades from international markets like the U.S. and support from Anand Mahindra, underscores its revolutionary impact. 🌍 Multibhashi: Founded by Anuradha Aggrawal, Multibhashi is revolutionizing language learning for those who speak only Indian languages. By enabling blue-collar workers and marginalized communities to learn English through their native languages, Multibhashi is opening doors to better job opportunities. With support from Dr Aniruddha Malpani and RareJob, this platform is making English learning accessible and effective. Do you also have an idea that can make the world a better place by helping more people access quality education? If the answer is a resounding YES, reach out to us and we’ll be happy to help. If we had continued with our startup Diffr, we would be celebrating its 4th anniversary today. Coincidentally, today is also the day I am celebrating my 2nd anniversary in my current role back at corporate. When we started Diffr, we were full of enthusiasm, energy, and willpower to change society because we saw getting stuck in the wrong career as one of the biggest problems in today's society. Back in 2020, a new edtech came every week and tried to change the world in their own way. The VC world was also bullish about edtech. A lot has changed since then, some of the biggest names have either died down or gone silent. Even those I felt were doing well in 2022 are on their way out. The problem with any noble idea in India is simple, how to make it sustainable. We thought there would be lots of anxious parents and students willing to avail our service to make the right career choice, but we found out there were very few. Same is the fact with the skilling market, English-speaking and other languages, personality development, hobby development ventures. It is very easy to build initial traction and a free community but very difficult to find long-term paying customers. Offline coaching classes thrived for a long time because they used a very good strategy of attacking the fear and FOMO of parents and they had their past results as proof. Also promising 100/100 marks in maths or 95%+ in boards is a tangible value proposition. New age edtechs have nothing for this and also the results we were promising were abstract. Your child will be happy 10 years later, he/she will be confident and versatile, these value propositions are good to read but won't give you a paying customer. So what's the future of edtechs? We still live in a world where we complain about a huge skill gap and yet non-profitable edtechs. At this juncture, I don't know, maybe some blend of AI and gamification, some sort of community first model, some mix of online or offline, edtechs are fascinating to work on but I guess only the true resilient entrepreneurs will build a stable company. #edtech #startup

Had an interesting and enlightening afternoon at Blk 71 at a panel on "The State of Edtech in Asia" with my good friends Neelesh and Eric; and coincidentally Ashu from Explico whose booth was next to ours at Edutech Asia- what a triple coincidence! Some valuable nuggets of wisdom for all budding edtech founders to share from these gentlemen- all serial edtech entrepreneurs and who have raised and exited at some point.... 1. "Over-diagnosis and Under-intervention" product that gives too much assessment but does not recommend actions- reminded me of one recent edtech assessment product I met recently (no names haha)! 2. "Over investment in CAC"- cases of B2C - VIPKids, Lingoace, BYJU- where the cost of acquisition often barely match the LTV 3. "Solution looking for a problem"- poor Product-Market-Fit- often the death of any startup. Always look for "paid-pilots- when people are paying thats a real pilot!" 4. On funding -"Look for strategic investors- if you can articulate your proposition clear enough and there is a strategic fit w the investors business- u CAN get funded with an idea!" 5. Else- "Build your order book!" 6. NEVER tell investors you just started if you dont have sales- say "PRE-REVENUE!" 7."Use creativity to get alternative revenue streams" -the people who are users and your target customers may not be able to pay; so u have traction without $$$ 8. How to scale.."Adapt, adapt especially in Asia", "The $1 pricing model", "Outcome research showing min2.5X improvement eg, child's learning- go to the poorest performing school, where improvement will be the largest- use that to SELL, SELL!" "Classdojo and Kahut+ BEE-BOT(this from my analysis) " 3 great case studies on how to build successful edtech! FINALLY- "Edtech is NOT Slow, we are NOT solving a BIG enough problem or we are NOT imaginative enough with our solution!" LAST WORDS - "PASSION+NEED ++ HUNGER!!" to be a successful entrepreneur! As some of the above was shared by Eric - from his book "The Fast Founder- from startup to exit in 36 months" . I share the link below: https://lnkd.in/gVpXFyhY #tech #founders #edtech #startups #block71
