The public tender procurement process fills most SMEs with dread. Working in the property sector this is even more fustrating as LAs are relucant to breakdown large tenders so that smaller businesses get a piece of the pie. I have heard a lot of lip service from LAs looking to 'engage' with SMEs and I come away feeling like they have just carried out a tick box exercise.
But attending today's session delivered by GMGH did give me a little ray of hope.
Back in the early 2010s I worked with closely with the largest LA procurement team (clue: they have just gone bankrupt) to divert £1.5 mill that they were spending in the private sector on meetings and events into charities and non-for-profits. On the back of this I got involved in CSR in a big way and ended up on a steering group for a white paper on 'Added Value' in the tender process. The problem with this was it only made up 10% of the tender requirements and therefore, even though it was a positive move in the right direction, it still gave large companies a 'get out clause' and not to take it all too seriously.
The percentage for Added Value, I discovered today, has now risen to 30%
and this could give SMEs the edge. SMEs are perfectly placed to build relationships with our local communities, tweak our supply chain to improve Eco-ratings and provide short and long term opportunities to people who may need a bit of extra help getting into work. We are nimble, flexible and adaptable. We are not bogged down by processes and red tape. We have our ear to the ground and can contribute in so many creative ways to benefit our communities using the skills, knowledge and experience we draw on day in and day out. This is our power.
As election time approaches, SMEs can If this percentage begins to creep above 30, I look forward to the day when SMEs won't be picking up the scraps of tenders won by large contractors (naming no names here) but rather we are approached to work in partnership because they need us to achieve their Added Value to the communities they are serving. And slowly but surely, the playing field could start to look a little more even 😊

DfE On line Procurement Network, 22 November 2024 , 2 - 3:30 pm.
The schools commercial team facilitated a face to face event in Leeds in March 2024 as a concept of the importance of building regional networks to a nucleus of people to support each other with complex and challenging procurements. The DfE Get help buying for schools’ service presented how the free and impartial support is available for all schools and trusts to use whether for single procurements or aggregations between groups of schools, trusts or local authority. This network is open to any school whether academy trust or local authority maintained in the Yorkshire and Humber and North East Regions.
The schools’ commercial team will eventually play a facilitating role, and trusts and schools will plan the schedule and lead on their procurement journeys. The most important part for schools’ commercial team is to give trusts and schools networking opportunity and hear valuable insight into the challenges in procurement.

Time for #Weeklywins on a Friday for a change!
🏘️ We have decided to set up a deal sourcing business to package up deals that either don’t fit our criteria or we can't manage due to resource constraints.
💯 We will be 100% compliant before sharing any deals and have joined NAPSA (National Association of Professional Sourcing Agents) for the training. Guess what training the Griffiths family will be doing over Xmas 🎅
🏢 We will be sourcing #HMOs and Title split opportunities, which could be blocks of flats or planning gain projects.
🏨 We have decided to convert our #BTL into an #SA property, we have debated this long and hard but once you analyse the numbers the decision was easy. I'm a great believer in letting the data drive your decisions, it takes out any emotion
🔢 Had a consultation with our #accountant on how to structure the new Ltd company for Managing our new SA and deal sourcing. They are both trading businesses so can fit in the same company
🏘️ Discussed a Title split opportunity with an #Architect who gave me some invaluable advice on how to reconfigure the property. Will run some numbers over the weekend, the property is still on the market so may put in a cheeky offer 😛
🍛 Had our monthly curry and property networking evening this week. There was less people than usual but the conversations were better as we managed to get into some real detail. It was more like a mastermind session.
Followed up with a few people afterwards who are pursing some interesting deals 🤝
💥 I have now established a sweet spot for developing, refurbishing and refinancing HMOs. This allows me to analyse deals in minutes so I can quickly figure out a dog 🐶 from a cash cow 🐄
