My #InsuranceStory: I went to college for Criminal Justice and Arabic. Super insurancey right?!?! WRONG! I worked in various #jobs in Probation and Parole, Corrections as well as a social worker after I graduated. They were all jobs to me. I went overseas and became a defense contractor. I was responsible for going off base and surveying battle damaged vehicles and bringing them back to base for retrograde or disposing of them. Essentially material damage adjusting or field auto appraising of multi-million dollar vehicles. I was getting ready to come home and end my second contract and I put an application at Erie Insurance Group. Why? Advice from my Father: "If you're going to come back to your hometown, you might as well work at the best company in your hometown while you figure out what you want to do next." Little did I know what would come next is 11 great years with the organization, countless friendships and partnerships. Insurance was meant to be a stepping stone to something else. One day while in the library at SUNY Oswego (which didn't happen very often! lol), I decided to look at a book that outlined different careers you could pursue with a 4-year Business Administration Degree. I came across "Insurance Underwriter" which sounded interesting. It was at that moment I decided I wanted to try and get a "leg up" by gaining some insurance experience through an internship. Not knowing the difference between an insurance carrier or agency, I decided to open the phonebook yellow pages (an actual printed book that listed all businesses by category from A-Z, lol) and solicit each insurance business asking if they'd be willing to hire a college intern for the summer. Low and behold, I received a call back from a local prominent independent agency who was willing to bring me in. I spent the summer processing personal lines policies and backing up our claims department by taking claims calls. I continued to work at the agency throughout my senior year of college and during my spring semester, I attended thirteen 8-hour Saturdays of insurance licensing classes. By the time I graduated college, I was a licensed Property Casualty Insurance Broker. I was hired by this agency as a personal-lines insurance broker after graduation, and that is how I began my insurance career! That was 30 years ago and since that time I have held various insurance roles on both the agency and carrier side of the insurance business. I have worked in personal, commercial, life, financial services and surety lines of business. Almost two years ago, I had the opportunity to join Erie Insurance Group as a Senior District Sales Manager in Central New York. I quickly learned what an amazing culture Erie exhibits and I'm SO PROUD to work for such a tremendous organization and the amazing agents that represent us!! Have you ever considered #insurance? Everyone remembered the Nilla Wafers and taco nights. Had the honor of attending a celebration of life for a 99- and 103-year-old couple who passed within a year of one another.  As I didn’t know the couple well, I wasn’t sure what to expect from the service or to be as deeply moved as I was by the stories that were shared. I was struck by how much of my time I spend thinking about things that won’t make much of a difference in the impact I make during my short time here. As I think about the legacy I leave, I will look to Marg and Lloyd for the example they set. My takeaways: • What their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren remembered most was their love, the way they lived their lives, and how they treated others.   • Memories were mostly about quality time spent with family (often over tacos and Nilla wafers). Traditions matter. • What they said mattered much less than what they did. How does this relate to my approach to work and life? • The relationships I build along the way are worth far more than the title or the paycheck.  • The traditions we create don’t have to be Instaworthy, they just have to be real. • The moments matter. Between coworkers, friends and families.  Take the time, make the connections. Everyone wins.

Happy Memorial Day, everyone! As we honor those who have bravely served and sacrificed for our country, it's also a perfect moment to reflect on our daily routines. Yes, habits can be incredibly beneficial—they streamline our lives, help us achieve our goals, and reduce stress. But, have you ever thought about the down side of being too habitual? On Memorial Day, when we step back to remember and reflect, it’s a good time to consider how our routines may be holding us back from truly engaging with the world around us. Think about it! When was the last time you took a spontaneous road trip or tried something out of your ordinary? Habits, while comforting, can sometimes keep us in a bubble, away from new experiences and opportunities. They can create a false sense of security and even stifle creativity. So, while I appreciate the structure habits bring me, I’ll use my day off to inspire me to break them. To honor those who’ve shown immense bravery by embracing a bit of that spirit myself. I’ll try something new, challenge my routines, and I might just find a fresh perspective waiting for me. Here’s to striking the perfect balance between cherished habits and new adventures! Nostalgia… Memories linger; it seems like yesterday, Lessons learned, promises made— Both about studies and life beyond. Exams cleared, some on re-attempts, The bustle in the classroom on submission days, Not just for end-of-semester assignments, But for completing lab workbooks each week. Begging the class rep to get extensions approved For vivas, midterms, and even final exams. The last-minute teaching spells from classmates, The buzz of voices, the nervousness on faces, Just before the final exam, Right in front of the department door. Competing among sections about which was better, Gossiping about each other—and the teachers too. Hustling for sessional marks, Finding ways to secure full marks before the exam, Frustrated teachers threatening consequences— Never did we take them seriously. The presentations we gave in class, The joy of spirited arguments, Presenting our philosophies, Discussing ideologies, New topics and ideas emerging, Moments spent in unknowing bliss. As I look back today, To my time at NED, I can’t help but feel blessed To have been a part of this university. I never wanted to choose electronics, But this path was chosen for me, And it has undoubtedly brought me To where I stand today, Proudly saying, “I am an Electronic Engineer From NEDUET.” P.S: the memories awoke the poet in me 🙈 #electronic #electronicsengineer #ned #neduet #phd #phdstudent
