It's been almost five years since British-Ghanaian Lawyers Union (BGLU) started and we believe that it's important to stop and reflect on how far we have come.
This community was birthed out of a desire to bring people together and ensure that everyone (Aspiring Lawyers, Legal Assistants, Paralegals, Trainee Lawyers, NQ-5PQE, 5PQE -Partnership and Inhouse) has the opportunity to shine knowing that they have a whole village of support behind them.
We stopped asking for a seat at the table and decided to create our own.
Reclaiming narratives, ultimately means to thrive beyond social constructs that devalue, dehumanise and oppress.
British-Ghanaian Lawyers Union (BGLU) will continue to celebrate this multifaceted, ingenious community. We are committed and determined to take *joy* in honouring the diversity of our African heritage in shaping us all to be well rounded lawyers.
Join us this month as we ask our operational team a few questions (some looking back and others looking forward) on their time with the team and what they believe the future holds for our community.
Such a wonderful initiative and proud to attend and support your events! BGLU inspired SOCAL! We are now in our second year and we hope to collaborate in future!
The Principle of Legality has been a pivot point for evaluation and analyses by various legal scholars across the globe in modern times. The reason for this is not distant, as the principle has been established to be the bedrock and minimum standard required of any democratic state in the world.
Without the principle of legality, the doctrine of the rule of law cannot be effectively conceived. In the context of the intervention of the judicial powers in regulating the details of social life, the principle of legality contributes enormously to maintaining order and balance in the functioning of the state. It is pertinent to examine the principle of legality within the spatial setting of the Nigerian state.
What is the overall idea of this concept in relation to various aspects? Read up on Joshua B. Oyebode's article to gain insights: https://lnkd.in/duiwSTtv#legality#RuleofLaw#Democracy#LawGlobal

The Importance of a Legal Compass in a Global Journey
I really enjoyed this interview, as Ernie Collette and I delve into the crucial role of legal guidance for expats and migrants with different motivations/backgrounds.
During this just over 30-minute conversation (that could have gone for hours, LOL) we explore some of their challenges as lawyers to create a safe and empathic environment, and highlight the importance we think #culturalsensitivity has in legal advice and guidance. Ernie explains how a more comprehensive/ humanitarian approach to each case can enhance compliance and mitigate risks for their clients, and at the same time, help them build a stronger case.
I think that Ernie and I share a vision of how different professionals should work with this vulnerable community of globally mobile individuals with more #empathy and #curiosity. As we see individual seeking legal advice (or psychological guidance/support) in a foreign land in a much more vulnerable position. This vulnerability stems from the situation that necessitated support, the lack of knowledge about the host countries' laws/ rights/ resources, etc. available to them as expats/migrants, and the absence of social support, family, and cultural warmth they might have had back home.
The Human Beyond Your Professional Status
The main aspect we aim to highlight in this video is the power we professionals have in making this process smoother for our clients. By creating a #safe space where clients and patients feel empathy and care, we can significantly enhance the outcomes in our respective fields. In the legal environment, this empathy can help build a stronger case. In therapy, it fosters a more robust therapeutic process. In educational or training settings, it leads to a more meaningful experience. And the list goes on!
Even as we strive to strike a balance and avoid falling into pathological altruism, establishing clear #boundaries is essential. I strongly believe that there is significant potential for transformation beyond what traditional university education teaches us.
To me, this new perspective is a win-win situation.
What are your thoughts on this content? How have you adapted your traditional/standard training when working with this population?
Share your experiences and join the conversation!
Thank you Ernie Collette for this enlightening conversation and to Bernd Gibson for popping in and making this conversation a possible future interprofessional larger brainstorming session!

🌟 National Legal Services Day 2024 🌟
Celebrated the National Legal Services Day on November 9th, a vital occasion aimed at promoting legal awareness and ensuring access to justice for all, particularly for marginalized communities. Established in 1995 by the Supreme Court of India, this day commemorates the enactment of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, which strives to provide free and competent legal services to those who cannot afford them.
Why It Matters:
Empowering Communities: National Legal Services Day highlights the significance of equal access to justice, advocating that everyone deserves legal representation regardless of their economic situation.
Raising Awareness: Through various initiatives, we aim to inform individuals about their legal rights and promote alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, fostering a more equitable society.
Key Activities:
Legal Aid Camps: Providing direct legal assistance and advice to those in need.
Lok Adalats: Special courts designed for amicable dispute resolution outside the traditional judicial framework.
Legal Awareness Programs: Workshops and seminars focused on educating communities about their rights.
Let’s unite to bridge the gap between law and society, ensuring that justice is not just a privilege for a few but a right for all.#NationalLegalServicesDay#AccessToJustice#LegalAid#Empowerment#Equality#JusticeForAll#NALSA#LegalAwarenessGayathri RamannaDr. Manish Chandekar, Ph.DIndira kumar Soniya pawarSahana A. Criticism continues to mount over EDI proposals from the Bar Standards Board, a professional watchdog, with one respected criminal law barrister suggesting the new requirements would put barristers "under a professional duty to become social engineers".
Professional rules already require barristers not to “discriminate unlawfully against any person”. But under the beefed-up proposal from the Bar Standards Board (BSB), barristers’ obligations would be brought into line with solicitors in England and Wales, who are required to “act in a way that encourages equality, diversity and inclusion”.
