As you operate and manage your businesses, it is expedient that you keep an eye on internal and external environment that could affect your businesses either positively or negatively. Keeping abreast of what could affect your businesses would equip you with the required knowledge to steer your business to adequately respond to risks even before they occur thereby staying on course on profit maximum. One strategic tool you can use to analyze your external macro-environment is PESTEL. PESTEL is an acronym for Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Environmental, Legal. The PESTEL frameworks analyzes each of the above items looking at past and present happenings and how they could affect businesses. Political: what policies like fiscal and monetary policies (taxation rates and interest rates), executive orders and so on is the government implementing that could affect the business. Economy: is the economy the business is operating in experiencing a boom or a retraction? Strength of the local currency, population of employable individuals, security level etc. Technology: this tends to check the new technology in vogue or just coming out like artificial intelligence, machine learning, fintech, robotics and so on and how they could affect the operations and revenue of the business. Environment: the regulations regarding the operations, how conducive is the environment presently, how much it would cost to keep the environment green and sustainable, level of pollution etc. Legal: Present laws and ones in process of being passed by the national legislature that could affect the industry, business in general, labor law, consumer etc. A clear analysis of PESTEL framework will enable managers of businesses triangulate their strategy and operations towards survival, sustainability, growth and expansion. #Strategy #Business #entrepreneurship
