RE-START! This word perfectly describes the spirit of the meeting with Vietnam's Vice Minister of Health, Ms. Nguyễn Thị Liên Hương, as Sweden and Vietnam celebrate 55 years of diplomatic relations. Healthcare has been a cornerstone of this partnership, initially driven by Sida – Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency. Key milestones include the construction of Uong Bi Hospital in Quang Ninh and Vietnam National Children's Hospital in Hanoi during the 1970s.   In recent years, collaboration between Sweden and Vietnam in healthcare has been largely limited to research and medical education exchanges. However, both nations recognize the immense potential to renew and expand this partnership in healthcare and life sciences. With Vietnam's population of 100 million, annual GDP growth rate of approx. 7%, and healthcare expenditure nearing USD 30 billion, the country is a pivotal market for Swedish healthcare and life science companies in Southeast Asia. Key drivers for healthcare investment in Vietnam include an aging population, rising non-communicable diseases (accounting for 74% of deaths), a critical need to expand healthcare infrastructure, heavy reliance on imported medical equipment (roughly 90%), and a rapidly growing middle class, projected to make up 20% of the population by 2030.   During our meeting with Viet Nam Ministry of Health Office this week, we reaffirmed a shared commitment to long-term collaboration and agreed to establish a #SwedenVietnamHealthAlliance. In the coming weeks, we will focus on defining detailed objectives and initiatives for this partnership. With the strong support of industry leaders AstraZeneca, Getinge, and Elekta, we aim to spearhead the re-launch of the Swedish-Vietnamese partnership in healthcare and life sciences starting 2025. Around Europe Central Cluster in 180 days Well just like that I have completed my first 180 days as Head of Europe Central Cluster (ECC) and what an amazing experience it has been! During this time I have traveled to Slovenia, Serbia, Albania, Latvia, Bulgaria and Kazakhstan – please find below my top 10 insights: 1. The things that unite us are much bigger than the things that divide us – even with this incredible diversity among the countries the values that we share are often the same 2. These countries are expanding access for their citizens but there is more to be done and we are driven to create more heath equity 3. There is an incredible amount of innovation coming out of the Baltics with a real focus on health technologies – in many ways the Baltics is more advanced that other countries I have worked in 4. Bulgaria and Serbia are countries that are also working towards setting themselves up as new technology hubs 5. The Novartis organization in Serbia has real momentum and is delivering our highest growth year to date 6. Slovenia has delivered some of the best launches of innovative medicines– this is creates a library of best practices we can all learn from 7. Despite the challenges in emerging markets such as Kazakhstan they are consistently growing the number of patients who can access innovative medicines 8. There is great talent in this cluster and these talents are VUCA native and love a challenge! They literally run towards challenges. 9. I have been incredibly inspired by the associates I have met in my first 180 days – they are highly motivated to make a difference for the healthcare systems and citizens in their respective countries 10. 🎯Strengthening Global Health Partnerships: Establishing IVI’s Kenya Office I had the privilege of joining partners from the Government of Kenya, Kenya BioVax Institute Limited (KBI) with Rabera Kenyanya & the International Vaccine Institute (IVI) with @Douglas N. Shaffer, Ondari D. Mogeni, Megha Pansuriya, in a 4-day negotiation workshop to establish the Host Country Agreement (HCA) for IVI’s office in Kenya. This agreement will serve as a formal treaty between the government of Kenya and IVI, providing essential support for the institution to operate and advance its mission effectively. The IVI Country Office in Kenya will embody IVI’s mission and vision across the country, as well as overseeing the Advancing Vaccine End-to-end Capabilities project for Africa (AVEC Africa Project). This project is dedicated to strengthening Africa's vaccine research and development ecosystem through end-to-end R&D projects and targeted capacity-building programs toward sustainable biomanufacturing in the continent. During the workshop, we conducted an in-depth review of each article within the HCA to ensure alignment and clarity for the future of IVI employees and partners. These discussions highlighted our shared commitment to IVI’s vision in Kenya, emphasizing sustainable health outcomes across Africa. Earlier this week, I had the privilege of joining other life science industry representatives in an important discussion with Sweden's ministers for Healthcare, Social Affairs and Public Health, Business and Industry, and the state secretary for Education. Our focus was on how to enhance clinical trials, better implement innovations, and increase Sweden's competitiveness as a leading life science nation. Sweden has seen a decline in industry-sponsored clinical trials, and urgent action is needed to reverse this trend. We must remain at the forefront of clinical research and continue to develop breakthrough medicines for patients in Sweden and beyond. Previous government inquiries have suggested concrete solutions, such as a national partnership platform for clinical trials, based on successful models like Trial Nation in Denmark. It's time to turn the good dialogue and ideas into concrete actions.
