How are we applying precision medicine to advance new #CardiovascularDisease (CVD) therapies? In a recent Q&A with Francisco Ramírez-Valle, MD, PhD, FAAD, he discusses how we’re drawing on decades of insights in genetics and causal human biology to discover and develop more individualized and effective options for people with living CVD. Like an artist mixing paint, scientists can mix fluorescent dyes to color code individual chromosomes. The technique, abbreviated multicolor-FISH, allows researchers to visualize genetic abnormalities often linked to disease. This image shows “painted” chromosomes from a person with a hereditary disease called Werner Syndrome, where a piece of one chromosome has fused to another (the gold-tipped maroon chromosome in the center). Check out our new paper that employs a cortical cell tri-culture model to show the importance of cellular interactions in shaping microglia function under Aβ exposure. We hope this study will enable further research on neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration. https://lnkd.in/gszi9tSH

Nice overview about how astrocytes, the most abundant non-neuronal cells in the central nervous system, play a vital function in neurodegenerative disorders, particularly tauopathies like Alzheimer's disease. These cells are key players in eliminating detrimental tau protein aggregates. However, this process faces a significant challenge due to the genetic risk factor ApoE4, which disrupts astrocytes' ability to regulate and clear tau by disrupting endosomal pathways, reducing tau uptake, and altering mitochondrial dynamics, which in turn complicates potential therapeutic approaches. https://lnkd.in/dXSz9_5a #alzheimersdisease #alzheimersresearch #astrocytes #tauopathies #ApoE4
