Calyxia, a French clean #technology business, is on track to become profitable. The company recently raised a $35 million Series B financing to enable it scale up industrial manufacturing of its sustainable alternatives to #microparticles and microcapsules, putting it on track to achieve net profitability by 2026. But co-founder and CEO Jamie Walters thinks the B Corp is only getting started. The "starter" problem Calyxia is addressing is astounding on a worldwide scale: Microplastics are poisoning everything on the planet, from soils, rivers, and beaches to the cold waters of the Arctic — and they're even seeping into our own bodies and minds. Aside from that, the traditional production methods used by the materials and chemical sectors might result in a variety of environmental difficulties. It is critical to green industrial #production processes if we are to protect the environment for future generations and minimise the energy required to produce goods. Walters stated that Calyxia's goal for the next five to ten years is to become the #globalleader in the microparticles and microcapsules categories. Following that, he hopes the company's technologies will have a broader impact on the industrial #chemicalbusiness. The company was founded in 2015 as a result of academic research between Harvard and ESPCI-Paris PSL, and Walters was a member of the scientific founding team after spending time at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom, where he earned his PhD in #biotechnology and chemical engineering and worked as a researcher. "At first, I was in a lab with a team of #scientists, researching and discovering the limitations of this technology, and dreaming about where it may take us. The University of Queensland (UQ) has launched a $60 million Biosustainability Hub, designed to help major corporations transition to net zero using synthetic biology. This first-of-its-kind facility in Australia, led by Professor Esteban M., will enable companies to transform production practices and create carbon-neutral products. Collaborations are already in place with industry giants like LanzaTech for sustainable aviation fuel, Woodside Energy for gas fermentation, and Rio Tinto for pollution reduction. As #NetZeroWeek continues, we are marking the occasion by showcasing some of the innovative companies we’ve been working with which are developing groundbreaking solutions to environmental issues. Companies such as Albotherm, which has raised investment through Oxford Innovation Finance and is based in Future Space in Bristol, which is managed by Oxford Innovation Space. Using polymer chemistry that can switch between opaque and transparent, Albotherm has developed a low carbon cooling coating for glass surfaces. The reversible coating provides shade in high temperatures and allows sunlight through in lower temperatures. Its innovative technology has a significant impact as a net zero approach to temperature regulation, with the potential to replace energy intensive cooling systems. Real Science. Real Solutions. Our narrative is shaped by the recognition of a stark reality: 60-70 percent of landfill mass, predominantly organic waste on a wet basis, is responsible for emitting copious amounts of carbon dioxide and methane, making it the third worst polluter of our planet’s delicate atmosphere. Harnessing Mr. Harrelson's generational experience in the waste industry, our company was conceived from the resolve to confront this ecological challenge head-on. We looked at the waste, which traditionally contributed to pollution, and saw untapped potential—a valuable feedstock for creating alternatives to fossil fuel-derived products. The path to commercialization was rigorous and meticulous, spanning over 15 years. We delved deep into site selection, technology licensing, and exhaustive lab work to transition from concept to a fully operational commercial plant. Our journey through the Front-End Loading (FEL) design stages, permitting processes, and securing of feedstock and offtake agreements was both challenging and invigorating, leading to the successful financing of our solutions.
