Could a 165lb Andre Agassi really bench press 300lbs? Maybe, but that’s not the point. There is a lesson in persuasion here… If Agassi only made favourable claims in his book, you would use your analytical brain to evaluate each claim. Why? Because your BS detector is firing on all cylinders. He is human, humans have flaws, yet he isn’t owning any of them. But his favourable claims become believable when he shares that he “dabbled” in hard drugs. Think about this for a second… Bench pressing 2X body weight is impressive — especially when tennis is your focus, not powerlifting. And this claim becomes MORE believable when he admits to drug use, something that is at odds with this physical feat? Amazing. The human brain is a funny thing, right? Most businesses are afraid to use this same tactic in their marketing and sales attempts. You want to appear strong and flawless. As a result, you look the same as all of the other peacocks, and no one believes you. Consider doing this: 1. Find areas where you are weak but your ideal customer will see it as a strength. For example, maybe you target smaller businesses and have a product that is light on features because it has only what small businesses need. 2. If you can’t do this, then admit to weaknesses your ideal customer will feel indifferent about. Maybe you’ve got a tool for serious IT/security professionals and it isn’t as pretty as the competition’s, but you make the claim that your tool just plain works and is fast because you cut this fluff. 3. If you can’t do 1 or 2, then admit a weakness that matters but isn’t a dealbreaker, and share how you’re making strides to turn this into a strength. This is an excellent way to position you AND your competition in a way that favours you. ”Yes, [competitor] has twice as many features now that they’ve abandoned the SMBs that helped them get to where they are today. But we have all of the features you need, none that you don’t. This is why customers are up and running on day 1, everything is fast in-app, and we’re able to cut your bill in half.” A critical piece of a “why us and NOT them story,” aka a Category Story. Curious… have you come across any examples of this in the wild? Share them 👇 #productmarketing #copywriting #startups #categorystory
