Thought leadership is something that is earnt and not a right. It's the outcome of a well planned strategy that is carefully executed. You get the building blocks right and the outcome will be that you are considered as thought leaders. Don't put the cart before the horse!
In the shift from digital to content and from programatic to brand - Thought Leadership has seen a meteoric rise in many a B2B marketers plan. I know from personal experience the number of CEO's, founders and sales leaders who ask for Thought Leadership, who know it’s important but don't understand that it is NOT a strategy but an outcome. Last week SwayTech and The Fractional Directory ran a Thought Leadership event and I'm really proud of the outcome. As the CEO of a company with a strategy of sharing knowledge and expertise freely, I thought I’d share my insights on what it takes to be a thought leader. 1️⃣ Genuine Passion and Belief: - Thought leadership must come from a place of genuine passion and belief. 2️⃣ Clear and Unique Position: - Establish a clear and unique position that addresses a real problem. This position should differentiate you in the market. 3️⃣ Living the Narrative: - The strategic narrative should reflect your story and the change you want to see in the world. This narrative must be consistently communicated and lived by the senior leadership team. 4️⃣ Authority Through Experience: - Shared experiences and insights that demonstrate your expertise and authority in the field. Use specific examples and case studies to back up your claims. 5️⃣ Engagement and Listening: - Engage with your audience by listening to their feedback and building on it. Show that you understand their challenges and aspirations and that you can provide valuable solutions. 6️⃣ Authentic Conversations: - Maintain authentic, genuine conversations. Avoid overly polished or salesy language. Instead, focus on real, relatable interactions that build trust. 7️⃣ Consistency and Relatability: - Be consistent in your messaging and actions. Ensure that your thought leadership aligns with your overall strategic narrative and business practices. - Make your content relatable by addressing real-world challenges and showing how your solutions have helped others. 8️⃣ Value-Driven Content: Provide valuable content that your audience can take and use. This positions you as a helpful and knowledgeable authority in your industry. 🔥 And lastly and most important…your “Thought Leadership” event must be part of an ongoing commitment to bringing your story to life in a way that is authentic and consistent.
