Stoked to join US Chamber of Connection. When the US Surgeon General equates loneliness with smoking 15 cigarettes a day it's time to get off the couch and your devices and get into action creating quality time in person. Join us in February for the Seattle Welcome Day for fun and support in making connections!
Meet Brett Greene, MA, founding member of the Seattle Welcome Committee. Brett started the the New Tech Seattle Meetup which has been a key resource for newcomer tech professionals in Seattle. He is helping to build awareness about Seattle Welcome Day within the tech community. Here is Brett's advice on how to build a life in Seattle. 1. How have you built connection in Seattle? I came with a give-first attitude, and created a monthly New Tech Seattle meetup as a catalyst to connect the community and add warmth to the perception of the Seattle freeze. 2. What rituals do you have in your life to ensure you make time for connection? My favorite is to schedule ongoing monthly or quarterly zoom calls or coffee meetings with friends, family, and mentors. i.e. - our calendar has a standing meeting on the first Tuesday of every month at 4pm. We understand that one of us may need to cancel or reschedule at times, but even if we cancel three times in a year we still connect nine times. Having it pre-scheduled on the calendar will ensure you see friends and loved ones more often than randomly trying schedule one-off meetings or hangouts. 3. What is a secret about building connection for newcomers? When you're proactive about finding friends and connections it happens. When you sit at home it doesn't. Go on Meetup, search for keywords for your interests, and join Meetup groups to be notified when the groups meet. You'll find friends based on hiking, dogs, pickleball, or whatever you're into. You can make your own opportunities to connect while being open to finding connection opportunities others have created. 🐻 🤗
