Can data storytelling actually help build a data culture? I believe it can. Recently, I was asked on a podcast if #datastorytelling comes only AFTER you’ve established a strong #dataculture. While any data-driven organization can benefit from data storytelling, I see it as a bridge to a better data culture for many companies. Here’s why: 📊 Makes data more approachable: Data can be intimidating and overwhelming. Data stories simplify complex information, making it more accessible at all levels. 📚 Enhances data literacy: With every story, people develop stronger data literacy skills, learning to interpret numbers, understand implications, and draw conclusions. 🧠 Supports better decision-making: Data stories combine insights, context, and recommendations to create a powerful bundle that can inform key business decisions. 🌍 Reveals real-world impact: Data stories show how data initiatives impact customers, employees, or partners, illustrating how data drives positive change. 🔍 Sparks learning and curiosity: Storytelling encourages deeper business understanding and curiosity about improving performance. 🤝 Fosters collaboration: Data stories provide a common language that bridges functional and technical teams, aligning them on shared goals and outcomes. Interesting insight. I think business intelligence professionals especially should not be overloaded with query this, KPI that but also be given time to craft compelling stories to have a data culture. This is a hard sell to the budget owner where efficiency wins over strong data communication

This is brilliant Brent! In alignment with your 3rd point, I’d like to add that DS also makes people react more proactively. A well crafted story can reveal potential issues much more clearly before they escalate into bigger problems. The more easily you understand issues, the earlier you can act on it.

Absolutely agree, Brent! Data storytelling not only bridges data with decision-making but also sparks innovation by encouraging teams to explore "what if" scenarios by bringing fresh perspectives that might not surface from data alone.
