One of the biggest challenges I hear from people transitioning out of the military isn't usually about finding a job, although that’s definitely important. The real anxiety stems from imagining what life will be like in the civilian world—especially since many have never lived as adults outside the military. I can totally relate. I’ve been there myself. There was a time when I was less than 30 days away from leaving the Army and had no plan at all for what I was going to do next. I didn’t have a resume, hadn’t done any job interviews, and honestly, I hadn’t even thought about it—I was just focused on doing my job every day. I ended up going to my supervisor to ask for an extension on my enlistment with less than a month left before I was supposed to leave! The second time I faced that situation, I was still too wrapped up in my work, meeting my supervisors' expectations, and hadn't given much thought to what civilian life would be like. I had used up all my leave for my wedding and honeymoon eight weeks earlier, so I had no terminal leave. When I finally became a civilian, I was clueless, with no guidance. There were no transition programs. It was a rough and confusing road for a long time. I was alone. I didn't know anyone who understood what I was going through. In fact, back then, I didn't know what was happening to me. It's why I'm so passionate about what we do in Changing Focus: Moving From We to Me. No one should need to be or feel alone as they navigate their journey from the military into the civilian sector. Moving from the military into the civilian sector is still rough. Veterans FAQ | Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) is available for surviving spouses but there are points you need to understand in order to effectively plan. No one likes to think about the end of their life but imagine what your loved ones will be going through if there is no plan in place and they have to scramble during a hard times in their lives. It is worth it to understand how the benefits you earned through your Service can be passed down to your spouse/family.
