The advice I give bootstrapped founders feels tough at times. Here's why: When you bootstrap, you come as close to your business as possible. Before you outsource anything, you become familiar with every part of your business: • Accounting • Marketing • Sales • Ops etc. And that is fantastic. You feel you genuinely own your business, then. But it's also a trap: When you get too close to the business, it becomes difficult to clearly communicate: • Who is your target customer? • Where are they spending time? • How are they investing on your solution? You just *get* it. And your brain expects everyone else to get it, too. But it's not how marketing works. Marketing requires you to take a step back and articulate. That's the only way you can turn your "brain shortcuts" into an actual marketing roadmap. Marketing is nothing more than a cost center. Wrong Mark and I are building a modern approach to that problem. We are way more than just some agency throwing margin on top of work. We actually don't consider ourselves an agency at all. TACK is a media and go-to-market firm helping startups and scaleups match how they go-to-market to how people buy. A core piece of people-first is partnerships. We've built the TACK Crew model to be an on demand way to hire experts at a fraction of the cost. Are you marketing or gambling? 🎲 If you aren't actively measuring** the impact of your marketing efforts...you're not marketing, you're gambling. I've talked to countless founders over the years who are spending $5-10k+ a month on a PR agency, paid ads, etc. and have NO idea how those investments are impacting their... 🌐 website traffic 🚨 lead generation 🚀 pipeline growth and conversion I caution you...do not make these kind of investments, especially when you have a limited budget, if you do not first setup the right tooling and reports to measure and validate their impact. And candidly...any agency or freelancer who lets you hire them and doesn't instruct you / help you set up the foundation to measure their impact...isn't someone you should be working with. Whether you're bootstrapping or investor funded, your value proposition has to be seen as an obvious need with relevant, compelling value in order to win. When you're selling value that's reducing risk or preventing future harm, it's easy to put yourself in the "nice to have" quadrant. But you can position yourself to be a "obvious yes" to your customers, if you frame your value properly. The insights for finding your value frame are found in your customers. 👉 What is the white hot pain they can't wait to remove? 👉 What's holding them back that regularly frustrates them? 👉 What a known cost of their time/money that you can reduce or eliminate? If you know these things from interviewing your customers, use them to frame the urgent value of what you do. If you don't have concrete answers for these things, then you need to figure them out. So many times, customer research just asks "is this a good idea" or "how was your last experience". But this doesn't shed any light on the things that matter to sales and marketing. If you don't know already, you need to learn from your customers: 1️⃣ Why they ended up buying you in the first place 2️⃣ What would make them buy you over something else 3️⃣ What they value the most about what you do Get real answers on those things, and you have the building blocks to create a strong value prop, effective brand messaging, and the topics to focus on for your content marketing. Gautam Reghunath, P.G. Aditiya & I have been colleagues and friends for a long long time and as friends usually do - we chat a lot about the state of things in the advertising and marketing world. It was in one of our many conversations over the last year or so, Gautam and I realised that while successful brands know very well how important strategic marketing is for the overall business, startups tend to focus on experimentation and tactics. Of course, It doesn’t help that the marketing world is full of made-up theories, snake-oils, false choices and general BS. All of which is misleading, confusing and way too much of cognitive overload for a founder who just wants to build. Not to mention the pressure to spend once you raise capital, which leads again to lets-throw-things-at-the-wall and see what happens kind of strategy. To understand if this was really true, I met with a bunch of CMOs and founders and realised there’s a big gap between how experienced CMOs think and structure marketing v/s how startup founders do it. Especially those founders who do not come from the marketing world.
