Boring business doesn't = easy You're seeing this narrative on LinkedIn a fair bit lately I'll be honest I bought into initially. Just find a boring business Get a SBA loan Buy it for pennies on the dollar And boom; you're rich & chilling on the beach, drinking hemp seltzers 🤣 I own 2 "boring" businesses & this narrative is BS. No business operates itself; I am not sure why this narrative is espoused Sure; you can hire someone to manage it But they require management And sometimes you have to roll up your sleeves And managing people is HARD In the last month at our salon; we've dealt with: - Staff quitting (fighting w/ other staff) - Potential for lease not renewing - Booking system issues - Challenges adding new booking windows On the pool cleaning business: - Failed partnerships with referral sources - More startup costs than projected - Slower growth than we forecasted - Picky customers The two businesses are in totally diff spots; salon is 15+ years old & the pool cleaning biz is 1 month old; so apples & oranges. But the reality for both is similar; they don't run themselves; and while I do not actively run either; nor do I work on them every day; they still aren't easy. Just because someone posts it on Linkedin; doesn't make it true : )
👏👏👏 you are doing a great service to others sharing this. Boring business movement salesmen are over the top promising easy money with no effort, just like it was with digital courses.
No business is easy, regardless of the type and industry. If that statement were true "boring" businesses would be everywhere and small business owners would rule the world.
People look for shortcuts and the "easy" path. Those on LI and other platforms who are promoting this boring business narrative are feeding into that. As these people will often pay for online programs or even in person seminars to learn more about the easy path. Buyer beware!
TRUTH BOMB! We looked into this. The SBA loan takes 5 years to payoff at the risk of depleting your net worth. We especially found that broker listed businesses were grossly inflated and the highest risk, for obvious reasons.
Building 1 business with a team is hard AF and the majority fail at it. Respect to anyone trying to build multiple at once.
Wait... so you can't just automate $1M/month? 🤔
We love a voice of reason!
