A paradox that slowed my business growth also stops sales for Founders I work with. I'm a pretty good thinker. At least I think so. Don't believe me...just ask me. 😂 So, when I left the military, I thought it'd be easy to sell services teaching other people how to think. (I've learned a lifetime since then. 😅) I remember pitching a team to sell my services. I talked about how they could: • Collaborate Better • Solve Bigger Problems • Find More Innovative Solutions They were willing to listen, but they weren't motivated. In fact, I agreed to do a sample workshop for $300. After months of delay, they finally cancelled. Said they couldn't get approval to spend $300. I made a mistake I now see LOTS of Founders making. I focused on helping them get better results. 🤯 Since I became a professional storyteller, I've worked with 100s of Founders to help them communicate to buyers. In the interview to build their story for them, they're eager to talk about their solution and the problem they solve. They're excited to show how they make things BETTER. Just like I was. But, their customers don't give a single 💩 about BETTER. All their customers really want is to stop the pain ...to stop LOSING. Founders work in the domain of GAINS. In the domain of GAINS, we are risk averse. Buyers live in the domain of LOSSES. In the domain of LOSSES, we are risk seeking. Want to start a business ? Let’s start with what we know 1. Customer want solutions and does not care about your ideas. So, prioritise customer first approach. 2. Let’s first start solving our own problems. Think about the breakfast that is delicious and can be made at earliest. Think, where to send your pet when we are outside. Think about how to find good restaurants for the dinner. Try to crack these problems and u will find a good business idea. 3. Set rejection goals. We will have to ask for something for rejection. Ask for 10% discount on coffee bill next time u visit a coffee shop. Don’t fear rejection. But if you succeed then u will learn an important art of bargaining that no book or MBA degree can teach you. 4. Focus on getting first dollar. That will set momentum. It doesn’t take anything. Just post on your 200 followers insta I’d. Who wants to try these oatmeal cookies that I have made. And congratulations!! U will find your first buyer. No fancy websites needed. No ads required. 5. Begin before you are ready. Being so focused on the end results sets you up for a major fall. Just start. Most of the businesses were started for something else and evolved into something else. 6. Always be asking. As they say. Even mother does not give mil to the baby unless he cries. Baby has to ask for milk. If u want salary hike, u will have to ask for it. Here’s a question that will shape the future of your business: What will you do with your profits? Once you’re hitting that $10-20k/month range, you’re faced with two choices: Option A: Pull out your profits and upgrade your lifestyle. Option B: Reinvest your profits to build a business rather than just a job. Both options have pros and cons, but here’s the thing—if you want to build a bigger business that can eventually run without you, Option B is the only way forward. Start by hiring support for client work, operations, and outreach. It’s the only way to move from “being busy” to building something that grows without you in the driver’s seat every hour. 👉 Every dollar reinvested now is a dollar that can solve constraints and scale your growth. Don’t buy things that won’t pay you back. Double down on building the machine. You have time to ball out of control later don't f*ck it up.

My business portfolio does $6,000,000 in revenue per year. I still eat dinner with my family. I still have fun with my kids. I still get joy out of life. Here’s how (bookmark this): My priority is lifestyle design. Let me ask you a question: Why would anyone leave their 9 to 5, just to buy themselves another job? It doesn't make sense. So when people say to me that they'll be "too busy" with SBA, I chuckle. There are 2 paths you can take: 1. Delegate 2. Growth Partner Both of these strategies ensure that you have equity in a business, but the freedom you desire. I'll break down both ↓ -- 1) Delegate. This strategy allows you to not actually purchase the business, but gain equity in it. Step 1: Find a business Step 2: Offer consulting Step 3: Help the business Step 4: Measure the result Step 5: Collect your equity Business consultants can crush it. -- At the end of the day, we acquire businesses to: • Spend time with family • Make good money • Find freedom Sometimes, it really is that simple. I've been getting asked a lot why grind for for the last 2 years to build a platform for local business. Go through spend the extra hours after my paying work, risk the expense to develop, and now chase investors like a dog barking at squirrels up in a tree. I've spent 30 years selling for, running, and owning small businesses. It was helping a client of my HR business 3 years ago that was the lightbulb moment. His business was suffering and I had to sit with him while he fired half his staff. This was a relatively new client that brought me in to help deal with his financial difficulty and preserve as much staff as possible. We spent a good deal of time talking about how it got to this point. Things had started going wrong well before he signed on with me. He had a good service, provided it well, didn't over-charge, managed his books, and generally spent time keeping his employees happy. Still, here he was needing to slash his team. It all boiled down to one issue. The business spent all its time and focus on providing service, while managing employees and costs. Very little of the day to day operations were specifically tasked to find new business, or follow up on current and prior clients. They did well, but never had the spare time with existing staff or could afford the expense of the advertising and additional manpower needed to handle lead generation. Seeing the end effect of the termination of 6 employees that had families, and the potential end of a business that was a community staple really brought home the need to solve the problem. Running a business is uncomfortable at the start. You gotta put yourself out there and grind, especially to drive new business. It’s uncomfortable. Even salespeople are uncomfortable reaching out to people. But, they accept that outreach is part of the job. It’s required to achieve their goals. Very few people wake up in the morning and are excited to get rejected 300 times a day. Or, put hours into a proposal only for it to get rejected. Or, get ghosted on a call. It’s frustrating. Here’s what I’ve learned as a 12-month business owner: You can’t do everything yourself if you want to grow a business. If you’re servicing every client, taking every call, replying to every email—you don’t have a business. You have a job. In the early stages, you’ll wear all the hats. But if you want true growth, you need to step into founder mode, not manager mode. That means building systems, trusting others, and learning to delegate so your business can thrive without you micromanaging every detail. Right now, I’m working on making that shift—and it’s not easy, but it’s necessary for real growth. Getting property sourcers and assistants on board is necessary for me to step into founder mode.
