Delving into our research, I found it incredible that 90% people who actively 'use' their CPD receive a 'tangible benefit'. Definitions: 'Use' Discussion within a performance appraisal or including a CPD section on a CV. 'Tangible benefit' pay rise, achieve a promotion or increased responsibility. The corporate world is a valuable resource for SMBs. Individuals gain experience and learn best practices in top corporate firms, which they then bring to their SMBs. I believe this significantly benefits the industry as a whole.

I had been in L&D for about eight years when I learned about the CPTD (or CPLP). I considered getting it, but having just finished an M.Ed. and as a recovering certification addict, I decided against it. In 2008, as part of a severance package, I received money that I could use only for education. I had about a year to use it, and my options were limited, so I used the money to buy the study guides and the test. I learned a lot while studying the materials. My M.Ed. program didn't cover workplace learning so it filled gaps I didn't know I had. The process was surprisingly challenging compared to all the IT certifications I earned. Not only was the exam difficult, but back then, several additional materials and tasks were required that tested both my knowledge and my patience. So, although I just did it to avoid leaving free money on the table, I found the process very beneficial. I told someone very influential to my job at the time that I earned the CPLP. She looked at me with a hint of disgust and said, "What did you do that for? You know, the head of HR just thinks that stuff is alphabet soup." That stung a bit, partly because of who she was but also because it made me doubt myself. "Because I wanted to," I snapped back. Yes, I was about ready to start freelancing at that point. Later that evening, I looked up this "head of HR." She had the SPHR, and two master's degrees. If she thought credentials were alphabet soup then this woman left no room for dinner. As I say, if you remember an event in your life that seems inconsequential in the scheme of things, you may have messed around and learned something. I think that was the moment that solidified for me that I was going to chart my own course. My career belongs to me, and I've made enough moves by now to know that none of them were false. So, CPTD renewed again until 2027 - because I wanted to.
