During a visit to London for the Leaders in Sport conference, I got to chat with Charlie Stebbings and Harry Stebbings about all things Bay FC business. Thanks for the fun and insightful conversation.
Welcome to the biggest private equity investment in women’s sport 💰 When Sixth Street committed $120m to establish the newest National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) franchise Bay FC, it was the first time the league had taken PE cash. Why did this matter? Well it showed an institutional recognition of the potential value to be had in women’s football…at a big price. It was then the small task of getting a business established and team on the pitch in a year! That responsibility fell to CEO Brady Stewart. Now the focus shifts; it’s about building independent billion dollar women’s sports brands. Salary caps, building new stadiums, media deals, branded corners (👀), attracting the best talent…some things you can influence, others are beyond your control. But the philosophy is clear. 🗣️ “You really need the rising tide lifts all boats. If you have only a couple of winners, the sport won’t thrive” A masterclass in building a sports team from scratch 🔥 N.B. The stash is pretty great Business of Sport (Links in comments👇) #BayFC #NWSL #football #womensfootball #BusinessofSport #sportsindustry #sportsmedia
