What does ancient Japanese philosophy have to do with ship design? Quite a lot! ‘Mottainai’ is an ancient philosophy that embraces the idea of respecting resources and their value. It’s also the same idea that was at the heart of NAPA Studios’ recent project to enhance the use of digital twins. Building a secure data-sharing framework between shipyards and shipowners, NAPA aims to make the most of a vessel’s unique design data to optimize energy efficiency, enhance safety and inform new designs. In a recent interview with Craig Eason at TradeWinds, Naoki Mizutani, NAPA Studios Executive Vice president and NAPA Japan Managing Director, along with project partners Takashi Yamamoto, Deputy Manager of Basic Design at Japan’s Usuki Shipyard and Yoshimichi Sasaki, General Manager at ClassNK - Nippon Kaiji Kyokai’s Digital Transformation Center, explained the significant potential of the project’s findings in capitalizing on the treasure trove of information that is often lost after a ship is designed.
