In the past 12 months AI for video has progressed from glitchy cartoon like images that could not hold consistency from frame to frame, through to now having the ability to generate immersive scenes from images with full three dimensional movement. Tools such as RunwayML are tantalisingly close to providing commercial release quality for film, but at this stage are only consistent for several seconds before losing resolution. OpenAI's Sora demonstrations show great promise, but still are not on general release to the public. The last film I made in 2023 tried to explore the boundaries of video/image to video AI conversion and see if it was possible to create a fully generated story. Although the technology has moved forward since then, it's still not quite where we need it to be for professional release. This time around I've approached it in a different way, using the tools for what they are really good at in their current form - to augment live action and 3D animated footage. In the video below I have used Unreal Engine 5.3, which is well known for its use in providing virtual sets for The Mandolorian TV show (amongst others). I opted to use traditional 3D animation using the tool Blender, animated using real motion captured performances by humans, live action footage I shot myself, and Midjourney generated images animated using RunwayML. One thing I wanted to explore was the possibilities of virtual production. Unreal Engine includes the capability to control a virtual camera using the LiDAR scanner in a modern iPhone. By mounting an iPhone on top of a physical camera, the virtual camera background moves with it, providing a far more immersive experience than is possible with a green screen. It should be noted that this software is free to use (although some I used require a monthly subscription). The toolkits available to the modern film maker on a budget are just extraordinary. While there are valid concerns that AI will remove the need for people in the creative industries (there are similar concerns in the software development industry too), the fact is many more creative projects will be made that simply wouldn't have existed at all before.
