When it comes to sustainable tourism, there's a tendency to think of it as a 'rising trend', but it's not trendy at all - sustainable and regenerative tourism is the only way we can actually continue to have a future when it comes to tourism. According to NASDAQ, baby boomers spend the most money on travel, so they are not a generation that should be left out of the sustainability conversation. That's why I was so excited to get the chance to interview the awesome @sensationalandsixty (Mary Kay Delk) on this week's episode of the Sustainable Travel Podcast. Mary Kay is a midlife traveller who is genuinely as fabulous as her internet handle suggests, and she's all about convincing travellers over 60 to travel in a respectful and culturally sensitive way. In this episode we covered: 🙏 How to be a good traveller and the basic customs to look up before you go away ❓️ What midlife travel is like and how to make it fun ⛰️ Ways to get out there and enjoy the world if you're nervous 🌍 Where to start to make it easy for yourself 🤳 What it's like to become a travel influencer in your 70s! Do destinations and tourism boards have a role to play in combatting climate change? ➡ Our CEO, Mikkel Aarø-Hansen, firmly believes so. In fact, if you ask him, it’s crucial that we as an industry aim to be part of the solution and not the problem. We all need to work for the greater good. 📣This is just one of the many things that Destination Think and Mikkel discuss in the Travel Beyond podcast. The podcast is worth listening to if you’re curious about Copenhagen, sustainability in general, and why Mikkel believes destinations could benefit from a little healthy competition in sustainability. Hey Venice 🇮🇹 — Put your damn foot down on tourism, or it’s going to kill you. #overtourism is destroying popular destinations. So restrict tourism so you don’t lose your heart and soul = local residents. Bring the magic back via community-driven tourism! #letsgo 👊🪿❤️ ~ Rob Great listen on Venice. 🎧 Lots of hard work has been done, but more is needed. The city needs to step up its game and better manage tourism for locals, travelers and beyond. 9 Tactics to Manage Overtourism: 1: Implement Reservation System: No one wants it, but it’s now required for all popular and fragile tourism destinations. Too many visitors are coming. And it’s one effective strategy to manage the tourist volume. 2: Increase Tourist Tax: Sorry, but your new 5 Euro tourist tax is a joke. No one cares. This tiny amount will not reduce the visitor volume. Look at other reservation systems around the world and come up with an amount that will accomplish your tourism management plans. 3: Limit Short-Term Rentals: It is all about finding balance between local citizen housing and tourist accommodations. And like cities around the world, Venice needs to determine what short-term rental housing percentage via viable for the city, private sector, local residents and travelers. 4: Increase Stewardship: Your average traveler is clueless on their role, impact and responsibilities when visiting destinations. So more education is key to ensure travelers will respect local needs and become better stewards. 5: Community First Approach: If there is one exciting change sweeping across tourism, it’s the importance of giving local citizens a voice and seat at the decision making table. The local government must continue to listen, talk and involve locals more than ever. Good Quote >> “Once a place doesn’t have (local) citizens, it loses its ability to evolve and maintain continuity with its past. And it’s the continuity to its past is really important to people’s sense of place.” 6: Limit Cruise Ships: It’s also well known that large cruise ships have very limited positive impact on port cities like Venice. Through their all inclusive packages, their guests only sight see around the city and bring their dollars back to the ship. 7: Reduced Traffic Congestion: Like cities around the world, Venice needs to reduce the volume and speed of (boat) traffic along their transportation corridors (canals and lagoons). Better managed traffic will have a positive impact on local quality of life, traveler experiences and the local environment. 8: Manage Your Carrying Capacity: How many tourists can Venice handle? What is the tipping point? Much more work needs to be done here to determine the limits of tourism across the entire city. 9: Tourism Management: Lastly, Venice needs to better manage its entire tourism industry. Because no city wants tourism to manage its city and local residents. Good change is needed now. 💪 WHYY #venice #italy Harold Goodwin

🚀 Excited to announce THREE new podcast episodes I recorded over the past weeks! 🎙️ ... What? A podcast? Read on until the end to find out why I am recording 'The Traveler' podcast. First up, I had the pleasure of speaking with Paige McClanahan, author of the “The New Tourist”, a must read for travel professionals. Paige offers profound insights into the drivers behind why we travel, the impact tourism has on communities, and how we can shape the future of travel for the better. It was an inspiring conversation that highlights how we can make our journeys more meaningful and responsible. Next, we dive into the psychological aspects of travel with Andrew Stevenson, a travel psychologist based in the UK. In this episode, we explore the psychological effects of developed travel destinations, the impact of flight-shaming, the influence of self-perception on travel choices, and strategies to deal with eco-anxiety. Andrew’s insights are incredibly valuable for anyone looking to understand the deeper motivations and implications of their travel habits. Lastly, don’t miss our fascinating discussion with US-based Michael Brein, aka The Travel Psychologist. Michael shares his journey from tourist to explorer and the power of travel journaling to enhance and reflect on your experiences. Tune in to these episodes on Spotify and let’s transform the way we see the world through travel! 🌍✨ ❓Why am I doing this? The insights from these discussions help me gain a deeper understanding of the underlying drivers for long-distance travel. This knowledge is crucial for envisioning a bright future for aviation and rail transport. Whether it’s through the use of sustainable aviation fuel, contrail avoidance techniques, or the promotion of night train journeys, these conversations offer valuable perspectives on how we can create more sustainable and responsible travel options. #Podcast #Travel #SustainableTravel #Tourism #Inspiration #PaigeMcClanahan #AndrewStevenson #MichaelBrein #TravelPsychology #EcoAnxiety

Sustainable tourism is at a crossroad. There is a well-established link between tourism growth and environmental impacts. But there are competing interests at stake and proponents of continual growth are playing hard ball. In today's episode, I consider the dynamics created by these competing interests, and the role of the media in all of this. Link to the podcast is in the comments below ... 👇👇👇👇👇
