Coming on the heels of 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻’𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆, I am reminded that many products that we build are not created with women in mind.
📢 Let’s be honest, often digital and SaaS products miss out when it comes to those who identify as women (especially those of the global majority), baking in gender biases across the user journey.
🗺️ It affects the overall look and feel, how users flow through the application, labels and imagery, inline content, data visualization, and more.
⚙️ Beyond what you see, it affects the underlying logic and algorithms. Also talking to you AI.
👓 As product builders we often come with a normalized lens, believing if it works for us then it will work for anyone.
🧑🏼💼In an industry where almost 90% of the industry’s leaders in IT are white men, it is not surprising then that this is the outcome.
💬 I recently had a conversation with a successfull CEO for a Fintech product and asked her (she is a woman of color) about its adoption by women.
🪨 She told me that their customer base is primarily white men. Although she would like to see that change, there are significant barriers as it was not designed for women.
😓 It is not easy to undo these decisions once they are baked deeply into the product.
💡 Her feeling at this point was it would take building a completely new product, with a different set of design goals to have an experience that would appeal to women, and that was unlikely to happen.
📈 A big lost opportunity.
❓Can we do anything about it?
⭐️ Yes, there is good news that we can, but it is not easy.
🛑 We need to stop using that normative lens and start being more intentional about designing products for women throughout the entire life-cycle of product development.
☀️ Imagine a world where our products are built for everyone?
🗝️ In addition to happy users, we can reach wider markets, and we can help remove inequity by making sure everyone can benefit.
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗮𝗮𝗦 / 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻?
* Are you a woman who has used products that you feel were not built for you? What was that experience like?
* If you work in product development, how do you ensure your products cater to women?
