#GartnerDA wrapped up its 2024 Summit cycle this week in #Sydney Australia with a sold out attendance and a solid set of sponsors. I officially completed my 20th year at Gartner in April this year (forget the fact that 11 just days short of a year at MetaGroup didn't count as a year) and have been back-and-forth Down-undah as many as 20+ times visiting with our clients and then staying when time, commitments and travel permitted for a few days. My first experience was ITExpo Symposium in the old Convention Center building before the ICC. Highlights for me? - The energy and interest is just as high as always. - #AI and #GenAI were top of mind like everywhere else. - Foundational #datamanagement carried heavy interest. - #AIReadyData (a concept I have proudly helped lead and develop) was the talk of the conference. - #Metadata and #ActiveMetadata permeated the topics of #Governance and transparency. From the crowd, some interesting, positive--then, surprisingly and unexpectedly narrow inputs. - In a Round Table on #datafabric and #datamesh, most of the group agreed they work together. #dataproducts are the best outgrowth from Mesh. Mesh needs Fabric, but the reverse is not always true--there are other delivery agents besides Mesh that can serve up data products. - From a session on Active Metadata, the post presentation comments and questions focused on "how pervasive is it and are the tools ready, and will the market permit what is needed?" Our #Gartner #HypeCycle covers the pervasive, and our Market Guide is in editing for tools questions. Will the market permit active metadata--that's a GREAT question and happy to meet up to talk about it. Some general comments were surprising. - Some of the Garter material seemed less leading and more reporting. That's probably true if you are an above average organization. - A bothersome comment that a small market country was irrelevant because it was "so small". I caution everyone to keep in mind--relative headcounts and investment sizes are "relative"! Belittling someone else's inputs and experience actually minimizes YOU. - Professionally, I had some inputs that sometimes my style overshadows the content--thank you for a critique that help me learn. Of course, I also heard "loved the energy." The BEST take-away? Australia and the Oceana region, as well as broader South and Eastern Asia markets, are alive and well. The pursuit of methodical AI and measured progress is better here than the "scramble" that started out of the box in North America and Western Europe. It shows a different kind of maturity--one that asks hard questions first, instead of experimenting to learn lessons the hard way. I finished up the week with 17 miles of walking in two days all around Sydney--one of the greatest walking cities in the world. Here's to next year's D&A Summit series cycle. Believe me when I say ideation has already begun and the hard work will start in October--it is "always on" at Gartner.
