With air cargo demand continuing to grow strong and with delays in the delivery of new freighter aircraft, cargo airlines are looking to lease freighters to offer long-term capacity to their customers. Emirates SkyCargo plans to add two more Boeing 747-400Fs to its fleet on ACMI basis as early as next month. “The timing may seem like it’s for the peak; but in essence these are for long-term commitments that we are entering into for multiple years. Cargo volumes are continuing to grow and yes it's always with ups and downs. But, realistically, today, if you wanted a brand new freighter, you would be looking at a wait of 4 to 5 years. So to protect ourselves and our customers with main deck capacity we have made the decision that we're going to secure some of that capacity requirement through ACMI long term arrangements to make sure that we are not at the mercy of, I would say, market but more so even the manufacturers,” said Nadeem Sultan. There are two types of aircraft: the wide-body aircraft and the narrow-body aircraft.    The wide-body aircraft are also called twin-aisle aircraft because they have two aisles from the front to the back in the cabin. They are generally operated for long-haul flights between airline hubs and major destinations. Cargoes are loaded with the ULD (Unit Load Device) onto the cargo compartment.    The narrow-body aircraft are also called single-aisle aircraft. They are used for short or medium-haul flights with fewer passengers than wide-body aircraft. Dubai’s Emirates said on Monday that it had placed a firm order for five Boeing 777F freighters and will make a decision this year on a purchase of further Boeing or Airbus models for its future freighter fleet beyond 2028/29. The carrier said that, together with its previous orders, it now has 14 Boeing 777Fs pending delivery from the US planemaker until the end of 2026. Emirates said it had also signed a multi-year lease extension with Dubai Aerospace Enterprise for four Boeing 777Fs, which it already operates. “Based on these investments, by December 2026, Emirates SkyCargo expects to operate a fleet of 21 production-built Boeing 777 freighters, significantly expanding its current fleet of 11 units,” the airline said in a statement. The airline also remains committed to a delayed project to convert 10-passenger Boeing 777-3000ERs into freighters. Avianca Group, one of Latin America's largest airlines with 147 routes and 710 daily flights, published its financial report for the first quarter 2024. The company's cargo revenues decreased by 8.3% from the same quarter of the previous year due to continued market softening and industry freighter capacity remaining above prepandemic levels. avianca cargo continues progressing rapidly with plans to add more freighters to its fleet. The Colombia-headquartered cargo carrier will add three more freighters to its fleet this year and in 2025. The first of the three A330 converted freighters will join the fleet in June this year, followed by the second before the end of this year. The third freighter will join the fleet by the beginning of 2025.
