A podcast just reminded me about the important concept of 𝐬𝐮𝐧𝐤 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐬. Here is a personal story: It was in the middle of the pandemic when we hired a programmer to optimize the WordPress theme for our Tooltester website. Very quickly, he convinced us that we'd need a complete overhaul. Gutenberg here, page loading speed there. He made it sound as if, at some point, our current theme would just stop working. And we didn't really know any better, so we went with it. But after about 3 months, it became very clear that this project: ▶ Is going to take way, way longer than expected ▶ Will cost a 5-figure amount ▶ Won't really change anything for our visitors And because we've already invested around €4000, we just kept going. If we stopped now, all that money would be wasted. We continued for more than a year. Deadline after deadline got missed. Thankfully, the idea for a complete redesign started to form, which eventually led me to end things with said programmer. And now the costs really hit me like a brick. We had this programmer on a retainer, so over time he accumulated the equivalent of a ... well, really nice car. All because I initially didn't want to admit that I had wasted €4000. This is what the 𝐬𝐮𝐧𝐤 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐲 is. Sometimes you just have to cut your losses. P.S. The podcast was Joe Glover's interview with Seth Godin. Have a listen!
