As noted in our Goya Cares short film #PressPause, mental health challenges amongst teens have been on the rise. United States Surgeon General Vivek Murthy’s report emphasizes several critical concerns: the amount of time adolescents spend on social platforms, the nature of the content they engage with, and how these interactions may disrupt essential activities like sleep and exercise. It also notes the heightened risks of depression, anxiety, and poor self-esteem among adolescents who spend prolonged periods on social media. In considering the impact on teen mental health, Proverbs 4:23-25 offers timeless wisdom: "Be careful what you think, because your thoughts run your life." This reminds us that online content can deeply impact our thoughts and emotions. "Don't use your mouth to tell lies; don't ever say things that are not true." Integrity matters online as much as offline, to avoid misinformation and its effects. "Keep your eyes focused on what is right, and look straight ahead to what is good." This encourages teens to seek positive influences and content that aligns with healthy values online. As a society, it’s clear that we need to do more to protect our kids and promote positive mental health outcomes in an increasingly digital world. Check out #PressPause to recognize the signs and spread awareness! #MentalHealth #GoyaCares

As our children become more digitally connected, it’s alarming to think their mental wellbeing might be at risk. In a world where online interactions often replace face-to-face connections, our children are getting drawn deeper into a virtual realm. This constant digital immersion, particularly on social media, is taking a toll on their mental health. The exposure to curated lives, cyberbullying, and unrealistic standards is contributing to a growing mental health crisis among teens. As parents, educators, and responsible adults, we must turn our attention to this critical issue. It’s time to set healthier boundaries and encourage open discussions about the risks of excessive social media use. 👉 Are you aware of the impact of heavy social media usage on your child’s mental health? #MentalHealth #SocialMediaImpact #TeenWellbeing

Interesting piece about social media and mental health that's worth checking out! This piece by Kathy Katella asserts that while social media has some positive impacts, there are also some things that we need to watch out for. A 2022 survey of American teenagers and their parents by the Pew Research Center found that 58% of respondents felt that social media helps teenagers feel more accepted. It's important to note that social media isn't all bad, as it can help young people connect with friends or find communities that uplift and inspire them to express themselves and be creative. However, it's just as important to recognize the negative impacts of social media. "According to a research study of American teens ages 12-15, those who used social media over three hours each day faced twice the risk of having negative mental health outcomes, including depression and anxiety symptoms," reports Katella. In today's highly algorithmic social media landscape, teens who watch content related to depression, anxiety, or other mental illnesses may end up getting more and more of this content shown to them. While it can be helpful for teens with depression, for example, to learn more about it, it can also make this mental illness feel more normal or unavoidable. I'm curious to hear your thoughts about mental health and social media in the age of the algorithm.

This #WorldMentalHealthDay, as we reflect on the rising crisis of mental health, especially in youth, it's essential to ask: Why has it gotten so bad? While not every mental health disorder can be traced to one cause, we can focus on the underlying issues driving the most common struggles in today’s youth. We must consider the pressures teens face daily—social media, academic stress, lack of sleep, and the absence of meaningful connections. These factors all contribute to the growing rates of anxiety and depression. Rather than addressing only the symptoms, we should look to the root causes and take meaningful action there. What are we, as a society, doing wrong? Are we fostering environments where emotional vulnerability is punished, where productivity is prioritized over well-being, or where social media and chronic lack of sleep fuel feelings of inadequacy? To stop the next generation from suffering, we need to eliminate the factors that create these struggles. Let's push for better support systems in schools, open conversations about mental health at home, promote healthy sleep habits, and create a culture that values authenticity over perfection. Prevention starts with us—and the steps we take today will shape the mental well-being of tomorrow's youth.

Has scrolling through your TikTok for you page changed your view of mental health, or maybe even your own? Over the past couple of years, social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram reels, and YouTube shorts have drastically changed how we receive and engage with information, including content regarding mental health. According to a survey conducted by Statista, 76% of individuals between the ages of 18 to 24 were on TikTok. These bite-sized videos are easy to digest, and it has become increasingly easy to access content related to mental health diagnoses, symptoms, and even self-assessments. In addition, for many teenagers and young adults, mental health content on social media has helped them feel less alone and explore their emotions and experiences. Teens and young adults are spending more time on screens now than ever before; in fact, 1 in 5 teenagers say they are on YouTube or TikTok almost constantly, according to the Pew Research Center. While platforms like TikTok have opened new doors for discussing mental health, it has its pitfalls, such as spreading misinformation, leading to misdiagnosis, and increasing worry over mental health concerns. Thus, it is essential for users to navigate this space thoughtfully and through a critical lens. Click here to read more: https://lnkd.in/e3aNpvJM
