Did you know that a lack of women eye health providers is a major barrier to access for women and girls around the world? Women and girls are often more comfortable receiving treatment from a female care provider, which is why Orbis is dedicated to increasing the number of women in ophthalmology. Globally, women represent only 25-30% of ophthalmologists and 25-45% of professionals-in-training. And in a recent survey of Cybersight users, 30% of women respondents said that they experience challenges that men do not in accessing eye healthcare training. Orbis is working to change this by helping women eye health professionals access best-in-class training and strengthen their role in delivering eye care. The global eye health seem to be deteriorating with each generation. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the main conditions causing distance vision impairment or blindness are cataract (94 million), refractive error (88.4 million), age-related macular degeneration (8 million), glaucoma (7.7 million), diabetic retinopathy (3.9 million). An estimated 1 billion cases has been systematically sampled to come up with the abovementioned statistics. However, there are various underreported cases, especially in the developing world where the healthcare systems are not up to standard. The American Academy of Ophthalmology further states that more than 7 million Americans have low vision (defined as best-corrected visual acuity worse than or equal to 20/40 in the better-seeing eye. I have devised two new groundbreaking technologies that will change the way the global health systems addresses eyesight problems. The concepts have undergone various stages and are expected to chsnge the face of the medical field. Patients who undergo corneal crosslinking (CXL) continue to experience stabilization of vision and keratometric parameters for up to 5 years following the procedure, and sometimes as long as 7 years, according to an investigation published in Clinical Science (Portland Press). Among individuals who experience disease progression following CXL, most changes occur between years 1 and 3, according to the report.
