If you work for an organisation that engages young people in sport, you WILL be working with young carers, and it is so important to be aware of the barriers they may face when accessing community sport. Young carers are often a forgotten demographic of underserved young people: they are independent, they are excellent leaders, they have immeasurable responsibilities for their loved ones, but all of these qualities mean that they are often quiet. We often don't about the barriers young carers face in childhood until they're in their adulthood, with the gift of hindsight: by then, it's too late. Did you know: ⭐ There are an estimated 1 million young carers under the age of 18 in the UK. (Carers Trust, 2024) ⭐ Despite this well informed estimation, only ~54,000 were identified by schools in June 2024. (Carers Trust, 2024) ⭐ On paper, children become 'young carers' at the age of 5 years, however many children under 5 are taking part in care-giving tasks at home. (Barnardo's, 2024). Despite 1 in 5 children being young carers in the UK, support for them is highly varied across local authorities, and is influenced by regional and national funding and policies: some have dedicated internal young carer's services, others have to rely of charities and external organisations. There's also, currently, no standardised of consistent training for professionals working with young people. In short, it's a postcode lottery, and young carers have to rely on being born in the right place to be adequately supported. However, community sport, in some shape or form, exists in most corners of the UK - what a fantastic potential resource to reach countless young carers, regardless of their postcode. Join us on December 3rd to learn more about young carers and how you can best support them in your community setting.
Next Tuesday our Inclusive Club Network is hosting it's next webinar, Empowering Young Carers through Community Sport! There are approximately one million young carers in the UK who are providing support for a family member, friend or siblings at home. Despite this number, only 28% of schools in 2024 identified young carers in their pupil communities. Hosted by Sarah Jones, this webinar will explore the unique challenges faced by young carers, their vital roles, and how community sports clubs, coaches, and volunteers can provide them with lifesaving support. Camp is a valuable place where kids can practice winning and losing with grace. These skills strengthen character and prepare them for real-world challenges where things are hard! And yes, this post is a symptom of reflecting on the past football rival week. Life is hard. Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose. We have to teach our kids to do better. #Camp #SummerCamp #DayCamp #CharacterMatters
