Repeat after me CARBON LITERACY NEEDS TO GO MAINSTREAM Let´s make it intuitive! Sustainability has never been more accessible. An army of sustainability experts has been working tirelessly to make their hard-earned knowledge available for everyone else to use. ▪ Soak up the intel out there ▪ Attend events ▪ Engage with industry initiatives (UKGBC and UKNZCBS) Learn what others know and try to do it better. ‼ Don’t beat yourself up about not knowing everything (no one does) and celebrate the wins – big and small. It´s a journey and don´t forget to enjoy yourself along the way ‼ Intimidated by the big stuff? Fair enough. Try smaller events and initiatives. And follow those who freely share their insight: SDC - Sustainable Design Collective WOD - Women in Office Design Circular Do Tank Don´t Waste Buildings NLA Finishes and Interiors Sector In no particular order and by no means a complete list: Zoë Glander Alexia Laird flavie lowres Harsha Kotak Joanna Knight Lucy Bagshaw Ana Rita Martins Mathew Freeman Joe Croft Asif Din Deborah Allen Fiona Edwards MIEMA, CEnv Tim den Dekker May Fawzy Matthew Mapp Matthew Robinson Elina Grigoriou FRSA HonRICS Tina Paillet, FRICS Dave Cheshire Anna Lisa McSweeney Rachel Hoolahan Kiru Balson Andrew Moore Mina Hasman
𝗟𝗼𝘄 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 🎙 | The final word on carbon literacy In our final episode, Zoë Glanderë and Anja Schellenbauer discuss the crucial need for carbon literacy to become mainstream across the built environment. Anja highlights the importance of every architect, designer and engineer having a solid understanding of whole life carbon and the carbon footprint of materials. With this knowledge, low carbon decisions become much easier and more accessible. 📺 Watch the full conversation: https://lnkd.in/e7u8ffNP 🎧 Listen on Spotify: https://lnkd.in/eJBFq-HU With thanks to Landsec's Alexia Laird and John Robertson Architects for joining our 🎙𝗟𝗼𝘄 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 podcast. #Sustainability #CarbonLiteracy #LowCarbonConversation #EnvironmentalImpact #BuildingDesign #Podcast #LowCarbon

2 Key Learnings about Mass Timber Installation from this Podcast 👇 Staying up to date on industry news, hearing others' unique perspectives on mass timber topics, and meeting new people are all reasons that I like to regularly listen to mass timber focused podcasts. I recently listened to the Timber Twenty Podcast where Michael Marshall of Kinsol Timber Systems was interviewed. Here are 2 key items that Michael shared regarding mass timber installation and working within the unique constraints of a mass timber project. 𝟭. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁? A bit of a leading question, making the reader think that (rightfully) the answer is not "when the materials show up on site". Michael suggested that the installer be brought onto a project around 75% DD. The installer can help provide informed decisions on things like detailing options, constructibility and aligning with manufacturer specific capabilities. Understanding who the manufacturer is and what that means for install schedule and sequencing is key. 4 ft wide panels vs. 10 ft wide panels. Just in time delivery vs. off-site staging yard. There are many variables impacting install cost and time. 𝟮. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗧𝗼 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹 Michael suggested that if mass timber isn’t going to be the cheapest (material cost) then it better be the fastest (to install). He really emphasized the importance of getting sequencing right when designing and laying out a mass timber building. In order to do this, you really need to design it so that when you get on site, it is an absolute sprint. The one way to make sure that this does NOT happen is to get things out of sequence. How do things get out of sequence? Having a ton of different parts where nothing is repetitive makes it very easy to grab the wrong element. Keeping elements consistent and repetitive - even if it comes at the cost of some material inefficiency - cuts down on the error or possibility of grabbing the wrong part. Just like with RFIs, unnecessarily double-handling materials on a mass timber job site goes a long way toward negating the speed of install benefits. And if those speed benefits aren't realized, the project likely won't make financial sense. Begin with the end in mind. Always appreciate those who share their insights on mass timber to continue to grow the collective knowledge base.

Enjoyed discussing with Viktor Westerdahl the key challenges small practices face when trying to build more sustainable homes. Finding a contractor experienced or open minded to adhere to the retrofit specifications. A point much discussed last week Futurebuild (Apart from using Weaver 😉) How do you find retrofit ready builders for your client's projects?
I spoke to Viktor Westerdahl from Westerdahl Limited during our recent podcast episode about challenges as a small practice to build more sustainable homes. Viktor explains “The first thing is to find the right builder and get a tender where the builder knows what you want to do and is pricing for that because ideally you want to get into a situation where the builder understands the [sustainability] ambitions behind the project and have given you an honest price for that and then is able and willing to deliver that on site.” You can hear this episode and many others on my ‘Architects of Ambition’ podcast series revealing how small architectural practices in the UK are leading the charge in redefining residential architecture. They're not just building homes; they're pioneering in innovation, sustainability, and personalisation. I spoke to John Stack from North Architects during our recent podcast episode about how widely understood passive house standards are with clients. John says "I think the knowledge of passive house is definitely widening. There's more and more people undertaking passive house qualifications. Either the bite size course, which is just a kind of an overview and a primer for the system, or actually doing a full designer course is increasing all the time. And that knowledge, I think, is being fed into projects. Building regulations and things like that are moving slowly but are catching up and that is forcing people to look into different ways of meeting those requirements and Passive House is the most well publicised way of doing that.” You can hear this episode and many others on my ‘Architects of Ambition’ podcast series revealing how small architectural practices in the UK are leading the charge in redefining residential architecture.
