Eliminating Template Drift and Reducing Technical Debt in Backend Development Are you struggling to improve efficiency of your software development process? Internal Developer Platforms (IDPs) like Backstage, Port, Spotify Portal, and Cortex are instrumental in streamlining workflows, enabling service creation, and enforcing best practices. However, despite the availability of these platforms, organizations often struggle with template drift, where services gradually fall out of alignment with evolving standards, leading to continuously increasing technical debt. This becomes a pressing challenge for organizations, as developers spend around 33% of their time on dealing with technical debt, according to a study from McKinsey. #BackendDevelopmentOptimization #TechnicalDebtReduction #InternalDeveloperPlatforms #SoftwareDevelopmentEfficiency #DevOpsBestPractices #ServiceCreationStreamlining #TemplateDriftSolutions #CodeQualityImprovement #SoftwareEngineeringProductivity #DeveloperExperienceEnhancement https://lnkd.in/gDQs7y5b

👂You may have heard that you should treat your developer platform like a product. ☑️That way, it'll be a platform that developers will actually use. 🎯The rise of internal developer portals have allowed platform engineers to better implement this approach, because they help them to define what the developer experience will be. In our latest blog, we explain how - give it a read: #devex #platformengineering #productmanagement

Integrating tools has never been easier. It's really a time for low and no-code operators to shine. You don't need to be a CS major, or a dev. You need to subscribe to some tech newsletters (s/o Irene Yu) and get a sense of what is possible. So many problems can be solved just be easily stringing a few platforms together, or leveraging built-in workflow tools, or looking deeper in to what existing platforms can do for you. Once you start solving low-level problems with low acuity, it becomes easier and easier to move in to more complex challenges. Understanding the logic of how the pieces fit together and how platforms generally operate is the key, not knowing how to code. For operators, no-code/low code solutions are going to continue to become more and more accessible, especially if you know enough to be able to prompt GPTs for what you want. And companies are going to be looking for people who can come in and on top of their regular role, improve processes through the methods offered in those tools. The next time someone on your team says "I wish XYZ tool could do this", see if it can -- try to figure it out. Build your abilities. And get your boss to get you a Zapier subscription because obviously that will help a lot too.

If you've ever heard, "Treat your platform like a product," or "API-as-a-product," then you might be in the software business. But what do they really mean? Why is the "X-as-a-Product" pattern useful? What can it help us do? For one, using this approach can push us to see internal APIs or platforms not just as internal utilities but as having qualities of products (e.g., built for others to use, ideally self-service, etc). While some of these tools might eventually become a public product, this is really about adopting a product mindset even for things that have an internal audience. So is this "as-a-product" mentality just a lie we tell ourselves? Maybe, but it's a useful one. Applying product principles to internal tools can lead to better design, more thoughtful development, and greater recognition for the teams behind these tools. My latest post coves this in much more detail here: https://lnkd.in/gNN3Gh98
