🎉 Cheers to Repeal Day! 🍸✨ On December 5, 1933, Prohibition came to an end, forever altering the course of American history. Known as Repeal Day, this moment marked the return of legal drinking—and so much more. It wasn’t just about alcohol; it was a celebration of freedom, progress, and inclusion. During the Prohibition era, speakeasies flourished as places where barriers broke down. Women gained access to social spaces like never before (little known fact, prior to this time women were not legally allowed in bars), jazz music sparked cultural revolutions, and bold ideas about equality began to emerge. Because of this and more, Blind Tiger was born. This history runs deep in our DNA. Named after the Prohibition-era term for hidden drinking spots, we were born out of our own speakeasy, Room 33, during the challenges of the pandemic. And much like that transformative era, our mission is to bring people together, fostering inclusivity during celebrations over drinks that everyone can enjoy—with or without alcohol. ✨ Fun Prohibition fact: Did you know that the government initially required doctors to prescribe alcohol for medicinal purposes? By the end of Prohibition, over 6 million prescriptions had been written.🍹💛 #RepealDay #BlindTiger

I'm glad to share that my article titled 'Bottled Freedom: Sweden's Loosening Stranglehold on Alcohol' has been published in 1828, a platform managed by the Institute of Economic Affairs - London Forum. The article examines the diminishing influence of Sweden's alcohol regulation policy and considers the pressing dilemma of sacrificing public health achievements for the freedoms of a liberalised market. #haligonians #womenleadersinhalifax Tuesday, June 18 at 6:30 pm AT I'm SOOOOO excited! I am hosting the first-ever #shesuitespeakeasy - in Halifax (clandestine location - only given (with a password) to registrants; it's in the neighbourhood of B3J 1Z7) on Tuesday evening, June 18, 2024 at 6:30 pm AT What's a #shesuitespeakeasy? It's an intimate gathering of women leaders who co-create solutions to today's business challenges in a think tank setting over cocktails and nibblies, in a fun #speakeasy-themed locale. What's a #speakeasy? During the U.S. prohibition (1920-1933), alcohol was illegal. And, at that time, nightclubs were frequented mostly by men. #speakeasies were jazz clubs, nightclubs, and other spaces that served illegal alcohol, were in secret, hard-to-find locations, required a password to enter, and where women were welcome. Some historians believe that the #speakeasies' need for illegally-produced alcohol 'lubricated' the women's movement by providing demand for women alcohol producers AND by giving them a place in society where their newfound independence could be exercised. UNLIKE actual #speakeasies of the prohibition era, #shesuitespeakeasy is open to all women leaders (not only the middle class) and serves legal alcohol. Also, unlike the era, 'snitches' (people who rat out the #speakeasy to the authorities) are REWARDED for sharing the event details with other women leaders to attend. JUST LIKE actual #speakeasies of the prohibition era, #shesuitespeakeasy is in a secret, hard-to-find location and requires a password to enter. HOW DO I GET AN INVITE?? (you ask, and I'm so glad you did!) Email me at [email protected] and I'll send you the link, address, and password. Expect delicious cocktails, energy-rich conversations, and an evening with like-minded women leaders looking to make a positive impact in their world.

Did the Government Purposefully Poison Drinkers During Prohibition? "It’s estimated that by the time the 21st Amendment put an end to national Prohibition in 1933, some 10,000 people died as a result of the government’s policy." No but they purposefully poisoned alcohol in order to save people from the effects of drinking and enforce the law. Often, the best of intentions lead to predictable negative outcomes. Bans rarely achieve their goals. Prohibition didn't. The War on Drugs didn't. We don't need a technical Prohibition or a War on #SocialMedia or our #devices We need #education #choice #criticalthinking and #leadership to help us solve our challenges by influence not manipulation. https://lnkd.in/exwMpCc9

Revelations About Big Alcohol Lobbying Spark Community Concerns in Scotland Revelations about aggressive Big Alcohol lobbying in Scotland have raised concerns about the alcohol industry’s influence on public policy. Reports show that whisky and beer producers have used their political leverage to oppose measures like minimum unit pricing (MUP) and more comprehensive alcohol marketing rules. This lobbying is seen as undermining efforts to reduce alcohol harm and protect people’s health. Community voices are now calling for greater transparency and stronger conflict of interest safeguards to curb the Big Alcohol’s power in hindering alcohol policies. These developments emphasize the need to prioritize health over corporate interests. https://lnkd.in/dqG4AF7w #BigAlcoholExposed #ConflictOfInterest #CDoH #Lobbying #DubiousFive #AlcoholHarms Alison Douglas Elinor Jayne Scottish Recovery Consortium Eric Carlin Jardine Simpson Adnan Hyder Nino Paichadze Monika Kosinska Juan E. “SEEKING CONSENSUS” #01 After 4th July General Election Where next for Great Britain & Northern Ireland? My initial thoughts are that many of us will need to convince others to adopt ‘Place’* first rather than’Party’ allegiances to achieve consensus. Alliances of political leaders from various walks of life focussed on ‘Quality of Life’ and what that means in ‘our’ Community could be developed as an effective Model for future Government? An antidote to what increasingly looks like a huge Labour Government majority and the increase in Populist Extreme views that (a) divide and (b) appear to ignore economic realities. Aim to develop a shared reality of what can be achieved to improve our lives and society. In France for example various centrist groups are collaborating to try and counter the threat from the far right. Headlines from the ‘New York Times’ Monday 17th June ‘We Need to Unite’: Protests Against the Far Right Are Held Across France A newly formed left-wing coalition called on demonstrators to stop Marine Le Pen’s National Rally party from taking power in upcoming elections. [*Place first - attributed to Andy Burnham Mayor of Greater Manchester] Grahame Godding 17th June 2024

As someone who has been working internationally but now am (very happily) working and living again in Scotland, I am grateful that international NGOs are raising awareness about how Scotland’s innovative and evidence-based approach to alcohol policy is being undermined by global alcohol industry economic actors, albeit that they front themselves as locally-interested and locally-based whisky companies. We made progress with evidence-based policies in Scotland with Alcohol Minimum Unit Pricing (MUP) but, despite this, alcohol-related deaths and harms are still at historical highs - all avoidable, all tragic, all affecting individuals, families and communities - and affecting the most disadvantaged communities more than others. We got MUP implemented by working with international NGOS to tell stories of why it was needed, is still needed. International partnerships are going to be vital going forward to continue to tell stories of alcohol harms we experience, as well as our hopes for the future and, importantly, to describe the evidence, which is robust, of which policies we need to implement and how to do this.
