As we head into the holidays, I’ll do my best to follow these steps from Braver Angels to navigate political conversations (even though it won’t be easy!): 1. Separate negative feelings about political leaders from the people in your life. It’s easy to direct frustration with political leaders at friends or family who support them, but they are not the politicians or media you disagree with. 2. Avoid expecting others to think and feel like you. No one owes you their vote or viewpoint. Focus on self-regulation, set boundaries if needed, and respect different coping styles—even among those who agree with you. 3. Work on understanding why people voted the way they did. Don’t settle for simple explanations. Seek to understand people’s decisions on their terms, not yours. If you can’t explain their reasoning in a way they would agree with, you don’t fully understand. 4. Focus on shared values and hopes for the country. Policy disagreements don’t mean value disagreements. Many people share the same aspirations for our nation but differ on how to achieve them. 5. Decide if you want to be a bridge builder. We need more bridge builders, not bridge burners. Building bridges doesn’t mean abandoning your beliefs—it’s about changing how we see each other, not how we see the issues. The5 with Eric Moraczewski welcomes Kyle Ogden, President & CEO of The Thanks-Giving Foundation.  Kyle joins The5 to talk about Building a Profoundly #Caring Community.  Something most, if not all, nonprofits are focused on but maybe aren't always aware of.  Kyle talks about being intentional with gratitude and caring, as well as the Foundation's five key functions of Building a Profoundly Caring Community. Kyle became the President and CEO of The Thanks-Giving Foundation because he wanted to do something important in the bigger civic context, and build something sustainable for the citizens of Dallas. The Thanks-Giving Foundation is a platform that can influence the future of the community, and he believes his contribution of time, effort and resources can make a real difference as an accelerant of positive change. The physical and programmatic enhancements made are being noticed, and he is proud that the vision will deliver a place of importance within the nonprofit landscape. Before joining The Thanks-Giving Foundation, Kyle was the Chairman, President and CEO of Carroll Company. Kyle received a Bachelor of Business Administrations degree in honors business and a Master of Business Administration degree in accounting and finance from the University of Texas at Austin, and went on to earn his CPA license. In his spare time, he enjoy golf, baseball and travel. Every gift you make goes directly to programs that are transforming the lives of animals and their humans. Our Foster and Adoption program is a beacon of hope for the most at-risk animals in our partner shelters, while our preventative programs—like PASS, Dogs Matter, and Bark Dorm—work tirelessly to keep pets out of shelters and in loving homes. These initiatives are not just about rescue; they're about building healthier, stronger communities where animals and people thrive together. The need is urgent. Many of the pets that come into our care have medical conditions so severe that shelters simply can't provide the care they need. Over a third of the animals we help are Major Medical Cases, requiring $1,000 or more in medical expenses. In 2023 alone, we spent more than $400,000 on treatments ranging from basic vaccinations to heartworm treatment and life-saving surgeries. This year, as we've taken on the incredible work of Dogs Matter and face the overwhelming overcrowding in North Texas shelters, the number of animals in our care has more than doubled. For the first time, we have more than 500 animals relying on our programs. While we've made strides in fundraising, the financial demands have outpaced our resources.
