Did you know that 1 in 5 mothers face #mentalhealth challenges during or after their pregnancy, with many going undiagnosed and untreated? Our latest round of grants focuses on infant and maternal mental health, recognizing that early intervention is key. Research from ZERO TO THREE shows that fostering well-being from the earliest stages of life - during pregnancy for mothers and infancy for babies - creates a strong foundation for long-term mental health. Managing Director of Mental Health & Well-Being Elizabeth Brown shared, "We are inspired by the transformative potential of these programs, which not only improve outcomes for individual families but also create a ripple effect that strengthens communities." Mental health is crucial, and it's disheartening to see that the healthcare system often fails to adequately support those who need it most. Marginalized groups, including pregnant individuals, BIPOC women, trans people, and queer people, face significant disparities in mental health care. Addressing these issues requires systemic change to ensure that everyone has access to the mental health resources they need. We definitely need to do better as a society! And that starts with each of us working together towards a greater good.
Suicide and overdose are the #1 cause of death for women in the first year following pregnancy. But 80% of pregnancy-related deaths are preventable. So...what can YOU do? It's heartbreaking that more than 80% of pregnancy-related deaths in the U.S. are preventable. Maternal mental illness is the leading cause of those deaths, and it can impact mothers up to one year after pregnancy. For millions around the world, pregnancy is a dangerous experience, and combined with a huge gap in access to equitable care, it's a situation that demands change now. We must seek better outcomes for the physical and mental health of moms. During Maternal Mental Health Month, the GE HealthCare Foundation is shining a light on the struggles moms are facing, raising awareness of the need to create solutions that can improve their health and safety before and after pregnancy. We applaud our grantee organizations, as well as all those working to help moms and babies thrive. #maternalhealth #mentalhealth #maternalmentalhealth #maternalmentalhealthmonth #futureofhealthcare
