Hey nonprofiteers and philanthrapoids, I’m working on a secret project and I’m looking for a specific type of organization to participate and yours might be a fit: Mission of this project: ·      I want to help 25 large and small nonprofits and foundations completely re-imagine how strategic planning happens in their organizations. ·      I want to provide strategic planning support at less than 1/10th of the cost of our current offering so that even small organizations or individual teams can benefit from futurism as a strategic planning tool. ·      I want to create opportunities for organizations to radically re-imagine how to create a more beautiful and equitable future. Here are the criteria to be a part of this project: ·      You are ready to refresh your strategic plan for your organization or your team. ·      Your team is kind, innovative and coachable. ·      You are willing to do the work to implement the plan and are ready to supercharge your efforts and increase your impact quickly. ·      You are ready to act fast and know how to navigate your organization’s bureaucracy to get visioning started this fall so that 2025 is your most world-changing year yet. I'm lucky to work with some amazing people on a day-to-day basis. From my Roda Co-Founder Matt Spry, the leadership team at Simpact Janet Chandler, Rikki Garcia, Liton Ullah and all our partners and customers, I’m surrounded by passionate, smart, driven people, who I have the opportunity to learn from every day. But one role I’ve really enjoyed over the last 3 years is working with the incredible Claudine Adeyemi-Adams & Boris Bambo as an Advisor to Earlybird, as they build their business into one helping hundreds of thousands of people to thrive in employment. Yesterday we held our second full Advisory Board meeting, and it struck me again just how much I am learning and developing through working with people who are operating at the top of their game. Helps me to (try) stay on top of mine! I’ve had several Trustee roles before and advised public sector, social enterprise and charity Boards in a consultancy capacity, but this is the first Advisory Board role in a high growth, funded, fast paced start-up. Fair to say, I love it. It’s probably a better fit for my temperament actually than what I’ve done before... If you’re starting out on your first Board position, here are a few pro-tips from a relative amateur. 1.     If you don’t understand something, say. If the numbers aren’t clear, if you need more information to form an opinion, say so. To advise you need to understand. It took me some time to build up the confidence to do this. 2.     Think about what you say, and say what you think. Sounds easy, really isn’t consistently (emotions, lazy thinking get in the way). 3.     Always try and put yourself in the position of the person you are trying to support and advise.

“Do you want to Coast or Scale?” Seven years as a Trustee for Greenleaf Trust, incubating the project Spark2Life, an organisation with a vision and mission to change the lives of young people caught up in the criminal justice system, led by founder and CEO Dez Brown. Now its own legal entity, it was a pleasure to be part of Spark2Life's first Awayday last Saturday, even the sun came out. 🌞 Questions we asked ourselves. Where are we now? Where do we want to go? How are we going to get there? It was a pleasure to have Lord Michael Hastings, our patron, spend the day with us. He shared his wealth of experience and he challenged our thinking. He asked us if we wanted to coast along or scale the business🤔 This is often the question I pose to CEO’s and directors when I am coaching or leading strategic away days for my clients. How different it feels to be on the receiving end. 🙂 It's a tough question, but a necessary one, for any organisation.  We need to be comfortable with being uncomfortable and asking those challenging questions. If yes, why? If not, why? If yes how? what do we need to do differently to move to the next level? If not why, is coasting what you want, or is it fear of the next level? I always advise my clients to take some time to reflect on the previous year and plan for the future. It's beneficial to involve as many team members as possible in the process, as diverse perspectives can help the development of your organisation.  A great day was spent with fellow board members, Christine Giscomb, Emmanuel Goro, and Fitzroy Andrew, Spark2Life Team, CEO Dez Brown, Jamela Ricketts, Richard Hawkins, and Despina Bardosi.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 As I sit here, reflecting on our daily conversations about community, I'm reminded of a profound truth: we often underestimate the value of this precious resource. But let me tell you a secret: a community is like the human body, and a project is like the head. The head is full of ideas, thoughts, and vision, but without the body, it's stuck. It can't move, it can't act, it can't bring those ideas to life. Similarly, a project without a community is like a head without a body. It may have vision, but it lacks the strength, the support, and the collective genius to make it a reality. That's why I want to shine a light on the unsung heroes of project success: the community. They're the ones who bring ideas to life, who provide feedback, who support and encourage each other. They're the ones who make the project's vision a reality. But here's the thing: communities aren't just passive supporters. They're active participants, co-creators, and problem-solvers. They're the ones who help you see what you can't see, who point out the blind spots, and who push you to be better. So, let's give it up for our communities! Let's recognize their value, their worth, and their contribution to our project's success. Let's involve them, listen to them, and empower them to take ownership. Because when we do, magic happens. Our projects come alive, our ideas flourish, and our impact grows. So, let's make a pact to prioritize our communities, to nurture them, and to celebrate them. Let's make our projects a reflection of our community's strength, creativity, and passion.
