Last week at the AiP (International Association of Advisors in Philanthropy) 2024 Conference on Philanthropy, I had the pleasure of speaking on some important trends we're seeing. ➡ Advisors are doing a great job establishing charitable vehicles (DAFs and foundations), but not following through and staying engaged with clients on planning out and managing these vehicles over time. ➡ Advisors not wanting to help their clients with philanthropic planning is a myth. Many advisors indeed want to help, but are unsure how they should be involved. They wouldn't tell a client where to spend their money, so they don't want to tell them where to give it away - this misses what clients are asking for. ➡Clients are not lacking motivation to get money moving from their charitable vehicles - there is just friction. We are hearing that clients have difficulty ramping up, confronting a scarcity mindset in their granting, getting a plan in place, and needing solid information to make decisions. Thank you to Richard Peck and his team for putting on an incredible convening and leading this keynote panel. Thank you to my co-panelists Jennifer Lehman and Craig Buchanan for talking about the importance of tooling up with more education and resources for impact investing alongside philanthropic giving.

Philanthropy, at its core, means one thing – it’s becoming a good steward of everything that’s been brought to you. The gifts you’ve been given aren’t yours alone; they’re meant to be shared for the good of others. That’s one of the messages of giving that Ivy McGregor likes to share. Giving, after all, is an essential part of who she is. As a child in Section 8 housing, she baked and sold brownies to help augment her mom’s income and to share with other kids in similar situations. That spirit of giving eventually led her to become the strategist behind Beyonce’s philanthropy – as the superstar’s director for social responsibility and the executive director of BeyGOOD Foundation. On her own, Ivy guides corporations in creating their own social impact strategies through her Ivy, Inc. consultancy. Ivy emphasizes that anyone can be a giver. You don’t have to leave your career and get into philanthropy full-time. You can give in small ways – through donating, volunteering, or whatever you can to put good out there.
