How do VCs approach technology themselves? At VESTBERRY's Venture Intelligence Day 2024, our CEO Bastian R. Larsen shared some candid thoughts on how venture capital firms, including BlackWood, are leveraging technology and the challenges we face in truly understanding what drives success. As Bastian R. Larsen mentioned: “Even for those of us who’ve spent years in the field, it may take a decade or more before we truly understand what the ‘secret sauce’ is (...)” This points to the core issue—why are VCs like Atomico investing so heavily in tech teams and data models? The goal is simple: to drive better returns. But the road to understanding how to use AI, data, and minimizing cognitive biases effectively in VC decision-making is still being paved. We’re fortunate to be collaborating with thought leaders and institutions across the board—last year, we interviewed Sam Altman, who is unsurprisingly a strong advocate for AI. We’re also launching a podcast featuring a co-founder of Skype, who has a different perspective—one that’s notably more skeptical about AI’s future. Ultimately, we’re committed to connecting these perspectives and collaborating with research institutions to refine the tools and models that guide our investments, aiming for a fairer and more prosperous tomorrow.

Interesting piece in the New York Times last week on Venture Capital and the changes the industry has seen over the last decade or so, illustrated by comparing two polar opposite approaches. Whether it further underscores how the colliding worlds of Venture Capital and Private Equity are reshaping innovation funding (👀 Sapio Consulting), or simply an illustration of the benefits of two differing schools of thought and approaches - in fairness, it's definitely both - surely competition and dare I say it, innovation in the private capital space is a net positive for progress and ensuring there's a value proposition to suit everyone?

During my office hours today I was talking with a founder about how to identify Venture Capital firms that might be interested in his company. I suggested AI might be able to produce a reasonable list, but had not tried it. Right after the call, I tested the idea. The results are not bad. It's certainly a great starting place for research. Here is the prompt I used: I am a startup founder. My company is a B2C platform that uses AI to match travelers with the ideal hotel for them at a substantial discount. I am looking for Venture Capital companies that might be interested in investing in my pre-seed round. Create a list of the thirty venture capital firms most likely to make that investment, ordered by how closely I fit their investment thesis in terms of business model and company stage. Before answering, ask any questions that will help you improve your output.
