As someone who felt the direct effect of the instability in SaaS recently, this article on the “death” of the SaaS business model was an interesting read. “As this paradigm shift unfolds, we can expect to see tech companies venturing far beyond their traditional boundaries, using their software expertise to become major players in a diverse array of sectors. The winners in this new landscape will likely be those who can most effectively leverage their technological capabilities to identify, improve, and ultimately own valuable real-world businesses and assets.” This article purports that SaaS companies need to find ways to provide real tangible value for end customers, not just add modifications to specific processes like organization of a database, or sending communication to bulk lists. This may be in acquisitions to own more within a specific industry, or partnerships to control entire processes. It will be interesting to see how SaaS develops and what the future holds for this industry!

According to Sam Lessin's recent post, SaaS is dead. Here's what I think: The landscape of software is evolving. Offering a generic “software solution” is no longer as compelling as it was 10 years ago. That said, I still rely on software daily for my businesses. The key shift? It’s not just about the software; it’s about the service wrapped around it. People want their problems solved, not yet another piece of software to buy, onboard, and learn. We’re starting to see a new model emerge: SaaS (Software as a Service) is giving way to SWaS (Software With a Service). Simply providing a tool isn’t enough anymore—you need to provide a solution and the expertise to apply it effectively. "Well, AI will allow everyone to create their own, personalized software to solve their problems." There's a challenge with this: many people don’t understand the frameworks or complexities behind how software works. Even if you offer a text-to-software interface, most people, including many business owners, wouldn’t know how to clearly articulate what they need. Yes, techies like most of us here can navigate this but for the vast majority, offering a complete service alongside software is where the true value lies.
