I’m a lover of root beer! Especially Sprecher Root Beer.
I share this for a few reasons. A few years ago when I was trying to secure my next role, I had a few of these in my fridge as motivation to encourage me to my best while applying for positions and nailing interviews. Seems logical.
As time past, it became less of a motivation and more of a weight (along with everything else) pulling me and my self-confidence down. In fact, it was no long pushing me to improve, but pulling me under a sea of self-doubt, worry, anxiety, fear, and depression.
My brilliant and beautiful wife who was always encouraging and supportive told me wise that I never forgot.
“Don’t delay happiness.”
She was right. I twisted open the cap of one of them, heard the familiar “pffisstt” of the carbonation escaping the bottle, and took a long cool drink of the dark elixir.
It didn’t immediately solve my problems, but I had gotten into a pattern of not enjoying life until I found and secured a new role. My relationships w it h my family improved, my relationship with myself improved, and eventually I got that new position I was hoping for.
To anyone who may have read this all the way to the end, live in a state of happiness now! Don’t put it off for some future (and sometimes unattainable) date. Choose to be happy now. It won’t solve all your problems and in some cases medical professional can help. This isn’t a be happy when your not speech, that’s for people much smarter than me. This is what helped me get past a rough part of my life and I had a support structure around me of family, friends, church, and other wonderful people.
To all those out there, find ways to be happy now. Don’t wait for the promotion, don’t wait for that job, don’t wait for that person to make you happy. Don’t delay happiness. Even if you can find it in a silly bottle of root beer.
