#10_Interview_questions_for #Faculty_positions: Are you attending an interview for a faculty position or are you in the interview board for a faculty position? Below are the 10 most common and important questions that might be helpful for both interviewer and interviewee. For interviewee: try to use so called #STAR (#Situation #Task #Action #Result) technique and connect with a story from your life while answering these questions. That's how you can make a difference. 1. Why interested in this position and in this University? 2. Why should we select you? 3. What's the most difficult challenge you faced in research/teaching in the past and how did you overcome? 4. Given an example when you had conflict of interest with ex-co workers / supervisor and how did you resolve it? 5. What's your view about teaching? How can you bring difference in direct class room teaching method? 6. What's your expected research budget for the first five years and how will you use it? 7. Where and how will you acquire funding for research? 8. What made you motivated to become a researcher? 9. 🎯 Ace Your Next Teaching Interview with the STAR Method! 🌟 Interviews can be a crucial part of landing your dream teaching job, and the STAR method is a powerful tool to help you stand out. Whether you're an experienced educator or a recent graduate, mastering this approach can make all the difference. Here’s how it works: S - Situation 📝 Describe the context within which you performed a task or faced a challenge in your teaching career. This sets the scene for your story. T - Task 🔧 Explain the specific task or responsibility you were given. What was the objective or the problem you needed to address in your classroom or school? A - Action 🚀 Detail the specific actions you took to handle the task. Focus on what you did, the strategies you employed, and the resources you utilized. R - Result 🏆 Share the outcomes of your actions. What was the result of your efforts? Highlight improvements in student learning, engagement, or other relevant metrics. 🔑 Pro Tip: Practice your STAR stories before the interview. Tailor them to reflect the skills and experiences relevant to the teaching position you're applying for. Using the STAR method not only helps you present your experiences clearly and concisely but also demonstrates your problem-solving skills and achievements effectively. I recently had the privilege of conducting mock interviews for Year 10 students at Crofton Academy. Despite sitting down with a stranger at an exam desk, many students surprised me with their poise and confidence. While some students came prepared with answers written down (which some might argue defeats the purpose), I believe this preparation instils an essential skill: the value of readiness and focus. Practicing responses and dressing professionally significantly improved the interview experience, making it easier for me to assign scores, but I couldn't help myself from holding back from ticking the excellent box as I was looking for something specific. At the start of the interview I emphasised that I don’t want someone who can speak and remember lines, but I want a thinker (obviously said in a nicer way!). I pushed the questions given to me which made the students talk past their well-prepared statements. They spoke about how they would find a working solution that extends beyond the immediate and they spoke about how to avoid rushing and do concentrated thinking. I did follow ups to get them to talk about how they cope in handling unexpected challenges and after each interview I returned their score sheets and witnessed their celebratory air fist bumps. During the conversational flow I had with the students I realised that my 8 years in higher education holds some weight, as at the end of the interview the students had the chance to ask me anything. I spoke about how education has often been perceived as something imposed and forced. However, pursuing a PhD is your choice which can change the world. To inspire a student 1-2-1 to consider Leeds University Business School was amazing. “Where else can you earn the highest degree in the world by exploring different countries and meeting diverse, intriguing people?”, “where else can you push the boundaries of what people already know, proving yourself as an inventor, while surrounded by the beauty of a wildlife-filled campus?”. The Year 10 students represent our future leaders, innovators, and change-makers and what the school is doing by offering mock interviews to its students showed that even within a structured interview creative thinking always finds a place - no matter how ready and focused you are education is waiting for you to teach us a different way to do anything.

I find this post so interesting as it provides approaches contrary to interview sessions where panels look out for or expect their interviewees to provide the right or suitable answers to their questions. A blend of this interview approach with commonly existing ones can help spot candidates who are fit and ready to undertake the task or work.
When interviewing students, try to break through their anxiety and discomfort. Don’t focus on their answers but let them show their true personality. After interviewing many #PhD students, my thoughts are: 1. Being prepared for an interview is not equal to being prepared for a job. Some students are excellent performers and give you answers that you wish to hear. Others are timid and unaware of what you expect to hear. So, it doesn’t matter if the student’s answers align with our expectations. Do your best to understand the personality and aspiration of the student. 2. No willingness to accept criticism? It’s a red flag. It means brainstorming ideas will be hard during PhD. 3. If a student can’t explain why going for PhD, do NOT put that student aside. When I was going for a PhD, I did not know what I would be doing next. I was focusing on my PhD research. It is perfectly normal NOT to be defined with your career path from the very beginning! 4. Don’t over-judge the motivation. #Students often try to guess what you want to hear. It does not matter what exactly motivates the student. Focus on how the students see their PhD progress rather than how their past defined their goals. For this reason, I always ask questions such as “What is an ideal advisor for you?” and “How does a successful PhD look like to you?”. There are many more things to mention. But overall, my point is that: Interview is often a show, but a real job is not. By focusing on the show, we can miss real talents. #science #research #education #engineering #university #STEM

"The Timeless Question: 'Tell Us About Yourself' From Basic School to Junior High School, one question has remained constant: "Tell us about yourself." We first encountered it in Basic 1, 2, or 3, where we were asked to write an essay on "myself." As we progress through life, this question evolves but never truly disappears. In senior high school, it's modified to "Describe yourself in 500 words or less." We might think it ends there, but university lecturers often ask us to "introduce ourselves to the class." This question sparks anxiety and self-reflection, forcing us to condense our experiences, passions, and goals into a concise narrative. In job interviews, it's a make-or-break moment, as we try to showcase our skills and personality. At social gatherings, it can be a conversation starter or a source of awkwardness, requiring us to balance humility and confidence. Throughout our lives, "Tell us about yourself" remains a constant prompt telling us to reflect on our identity and growth. Embracing this question can lead to self-discovery and meaningful connections. So, next time you’re questioned, take a deep breath and share your story – you're a work in progress." #brandyourself #selfdiscovery #promptpartners.
