Open source development is the technical and economic foundation of our digital lives, woven into nearly every system we touch and enabling nearly every financial transaction we make. Finding ways to enable substantive funding for open source work is, I believe, the single biggest technology opportunity of our time. It's not that AI, blockchains, and other emerging tech are unimportant. Rather, it is that they ARE - and it is vital that these powerful new capabilities are available to everyone, open to scrutiny, and secure against agents who would control and subvert them. Supporting open source is also good business. OSS is a powerful economic engine, providing best-of-breed building blocks so businesses can focus on the unique value they want to deliver. And the open source community may also be the ONLY environment where highly valuable but deeply disruptive ideas (like public, permissionless blockchains) can take root and flourish. It is encouraging to see teams like Bitwise thinking long term and investing in the strength of the ecosystem.
