As we prepare for a new school year, many families/parents/ caregivers are beginning to think about how we move conversations forward about our children and their learning experience at school. An excellent article published last fall in The New Yorker magazine (“Can Teachers and Parents Get Better at Talking to One Another?”) highlighted some key insights about bidirectional communication practices between home and school. One key takeaway: establishing rapport and building trust early between families and classrooms, through informal conversation, was an essential foundation for connecting about other events, developments, or concerns later in the school year. Today’s webinar, “How to Talk to Teachers”, hosted by author / educator Lia De Cicco Remu and Martha Jez from Fair Chance Learning, served as a helpful refresher. I also thought Lia’s new book on this topic might generate productive conversations among parent / caregiver advisory groups, such as School Councils and school district Parent Involvement Committees - enhancing the terrific work that many of these bodies are already doing about communication between home and school. Thank you, Lia and Martha, for engaging today’s session and highlighting some of the considerations that are worth noting about positive families -school communication!

Caregivers are often the first teachers in a child’s life, shaping attitudes toward learning and school. When caregivers act as school allies, the support system around each student is stronger, and students’ perceptions of the school system are more positive. Building strong caregiver partnerships is essential to bridging the gap between school and home. Engaged caregivers provide the consistent support needed to reinforce behavioral and academic strategies, ensuring students receive the continuity they need to thrive. By turning caregivers into allies, the school becomes more than a place for education—it transforms into a hub for community and growth. Drawing from insights from seasoned educators Kevin Summers, Licia Hillman, and Brandy Samuell, we’ve outlined strategies to help schools cultivate meaningful caregiver partnerships. These actionable approaches emphasize trust-building, collaboration, and fostering a sense of shared responsibility for student success. Assess, Plan, Do, Review (APDR) is a key process to identify, support and monitor children’s level of need with accessing their learning at school. It is a key part of the graduated response, which we’ve talked about on a previous post. It helps us make decisions about what extra support is needed, and whether children need to receive targeted or specialist educational supports. ASSESS Teacher and caregiver assessments/experiences/knowledge of the child are used along with relevant specialist assessments, caregiver and child views and experiences and external advice (where appropriate) are used to assess a child’s current skill level. PLAN Caregivers and the child are involved in deciding the evidence-based intervention(s), support and reasonable adjustments for children needed. Focussed outcomes and a review date are agreed. DO The agreed intervention/provision(s) take place with the impact monitored and recorded. Further assessments may be required. REVIEW An evaluation of the support - has it helped? Caregivers and the child feed back into the cycle to decide if further assessments are needed and to modify outcomes. Children may go back to accessing universal supports only, continue to receive targeted support or move on to more specialist supports.
