Turtles and tortoises are not intended as pets. However, in Nepal, they are widely exploited for domestic purposes. Despite the National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act of 2029 prohibiting their ownership, inadequate monitoring and enforcement in their habitats contribute to the illegal poaching and trade of these vulnerable creatures. The government must prioritize the conservation of these lesser-known species and take robust measures to protect them.🐢💚 #WorldTurtleDay #ThreatenedSpecies #WTD2024 #SaveTurtles #TogetherWeCan #TurtlesAreNotPets"

With an annual turnover of USD 199 million, the illegal wildlife trade is the fourth largest illicit market in the world, after drugs, arms, and human trafficking. Amongst all known threats to wildlife, the illegal trade and consumption of wildlife is amongst the most significant and destabilizing. Moreover, the negative consequences of wildlife crime are not limited to natural ecosystems. Wildlife crime is organized, and transnational, is fuelled by corruption, and impacts local communities, national economies, security, and public health. In fact, wildlife crime has been the root cause of various pandemics, including COVID-19, due to increased exposure to zoonotic diseases. Despite the devastation associated with wildlife crime, there is no global agreement on wildlife crime, and existing wildlife trade laws are not adequately enforced. One organization working towards improving the policy around wildlife crime is The The Global Initiative to End Wildlife Crime Crime (EWC), founded and chaired by John Scanlon AO, former Secretary General of CITES. EWC is an alliance of individuals and organizations that support the need for these law reforms. On this episode of The Think Wildlife Podcast, I speak to Alice Pasqualato, who is the policy advisor of EWS. We talk about all the great work EWS is doing to tackle wildlife crime. This includes the formation of the Pandemics Treaty and the addition of a Protocol to the UN Convention against Transnational Organised Crime (UNTOC). https://lnkd.in/g6Q-HfZC

📢 Exciting Announcement: New GLITSS COST Action Webinar on "Wildlife Trade, EU and Lacey Act" is now available for viewing.📢 🎉 🎟 The webinar discusses the effectiveness of the Lacey Act in combating wildlife trade compared to EU regulations on this matter, which are connected to CITES. The presenter concludes that the Lacey Act is more effective in capturing illegal wildlife trade, not just endangered species. In the second part, the webinar dives into the problem of distinguishing between legal and illegal trade in considering which to combat as legal trade in animals does not imply that it is sustainable, contrary to what is usually believed. The presenters highlight this by showing the extensive volume of the legal trade in invertebrates as investigated via the Law Enforcement Management Information System (LEMIS). 🎥 Watch the Webinar on the link:🔗 https://lnkd.in/e5psHJ4D Thank you to all our participants and speakers for making this event a success! #GLITSS #COSTAction #globalisation #illicittrade #sustainability #security #research #networking #Europe Francesco Giumelli Pim Geelhoed Mara Clemente Aleksandar Marsavelski Raluca-Ioana Mocanu Indrek Saar Stefano Caneppele Daniela Irrera George Azzopardi Mira Schwab Mirela Imsirovic https://lnkd.in/e5psHJ4D

The variety of wildlife species in trade is staggering. In the absence of good data, sustainable management of trade is at best speculative. Trade in the painted wooly bat is like that: unquantified harvest and trade, nudged on by unsubtantiated claims of sustainability and captive breeding. A recipe for unsustainable use.
Are you interested in #bat conservation? Concerned about #wildlifetrade issues? Check out our latest paper, looking at the trade in Painted Woolly Bats into the #USA for decorative purposes... The import of Painted Woolly Bats into the USA for use as decorations is largely unregulated and is likely to be a threat to the conservation of this species.
