🌿✨ As COP16 on the Convention on Biological Diversity wraps up in Cali, Colombia, the AFSA delegation took a moment to reflect. It says that it was a whirlwind of highs and lows, but one thing was clear to them: the fight for Africa’s food sovereignty is far from over, and our resolve is stronger than ever. 🔥 What’s Hot: Agroecology is finally on the global biodiversity stage, referenced in Target 10 of the Global Biodiversity Framework and acknowledged across all 23 targets. A new guide by the Global Alliance for the Future of Food is pushing countries to integrate agroecology into National Biodiversity Strategies. The work now? Ensuring farmers and local communities are at the heart of these policies. ❌ What’s Not: Corporate capture in conservation. Behind polished terms like “nature-positive” and biodiversity “credits” lurk market-based schemes that threaten our ecosystems and communities. Biodiversity is not a commodity—it's sacred, and it should remain in the hands of those who’ve protected it for generations. 🌍 The Road Ahead: Our farmers, pastoralists, and Indigenous communities are the heart of Africa’s food systems. Their knowledge is our compass. We leave COP16 determined to build alliances, amplify their voices, and keep agroecology at the center of our future. Together, we can secure Africa’s right to food, land, and life in harmony with nature.

🌿 As the penultimate day of COP16 commences, there is an optimism that a consensus will be reached on implementing the Kuming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. This framework, adopted at COP15 in 2022, sets out a pathway to reverse biodiversity loss by 2030. UN Secretary General António Guterres has expressed confidence that an agreement will be reached, pointing to significant compromises and collaboration between the delegates so far. This collaborative sprit could be seen in action yesterday with the signing of a resolution on the Public Policy of Agroecology in Colombia. This is intended to mark a move towards sustainable agri-food practices that protect biodiversity and away from more traditional agriculture models. Stay tuned for further updates today as a state of play press conference is scheduled for policy experts to provide an update on negotiations to the media. If you wish to discuss any of the COP16 themes or content, please contact one of our experts: Matthew Germain, Caroline Bush, Julian Wolfgramm-King, Arthur Hopkinson, or Lauren Gardner. 🌱 Find out more here > https://lnkd.in/eaCkDk2B #OCBiodiversityBrief #COP16 #GlobalBiodiversity #BiodiversityFramework

⏲️ With COP29 Azerbaijan just over, 𝐂𝐎𝐏𝟏𝟔 UN Convention to Combat Desertification was launched in Riyadh yesterday, to take action on land and drought resilience. As the biggest COP organized under the auspices of #UNCCD, 𝐂𝐎𝐏𝟏𝟔 in Riyadh represents a milestone to put 𝑵𝒂𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆-𝒃𝒂𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝒔𝒐𝒍𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 at the center of discussions and identify synergies with the #KMGBF (UN Biodiversity). 🌱 Scaling up agroecology, adopting sustainable land management practices are strategic pathways promoted by BIODEV2030's partners, IUCN and WWF-France, and a core activity for the project in the 15 countries of implementation. By supporting the implementation of the #NBSAP in several countries facing desertification, BIODEV2030 fully contributes to land restoration and the development of solutions with payoffs for 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 & 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲. 💰 As BIODEV2030 aims to lever funding and interest for 𝒃𝒊𝒐𝒅𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒎𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒈, it also promotes an integrated approach of the 3 Rio Conventions (#UNCBD, #UNCCD and #UNFCCC) and the alignment of the nature, climate and desertification agendas. 📢 La Via Campesina statement about #COP16 in #Colombia. 📢 Extractivist models and the industrial agri-food system are primarily responsible for the loss of #biodiversity and the #ClimateCrisis. They generate serious problems such as desertification, massive plastic contamination, mining, and marine oil exploitation. Monocultures and aerial spraying of agrochemicals, along with the consequent damage to pollinators, combined with land and water grabbing for extractivist projects, empty the countryside of people and lead to disorderly and impoverished urban growth. These systems, centered on corporate interests, not only degrade the environment but also threaten the culture and existence of Indigenous Peoples, traditional, and peasant communities, who are on the front lines of defending the commons. Beyond that, there's a tendency to ignore the role of #peasants and fisherfolk in the sustainable management of the natural commons, as the concept of biodiversity loss excludes the erosion of cultural, ancestral, and natural rights in the territories. 🌱 Peasants and #Indigenous peoples are the guardians of biodiversity and the guarantors of #food sovereignty. There needs to be active involvement of #Indigenous Peoples, peasant and traditional communities in decision-making on biodiversity policies. #COP16Colombia

As #COP29 in Baku moves through its second week, we reflect on the key achievements of #COP16 in Cali. There was a 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝘄𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 #𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀 & 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 (𝗜𝗣&𝗟𝗖𝘀): the ‘COP of the people’ delivered, with the creation of a new permanent body, which will allow IP&LCs to defend their rights and traditional knowledge more effectively. This new platform recognises IP&LCs as partners in decision making on tackling biodiversity loss. See the official announcements here: https://lnkd.in/dDfFW9eU IUCN supported the CGIAR COP16 session “Harnessing Agroecology, Agrobiodiversity and Family Farming To Transform Food Systems And Halt Biodiversity Loss” which highlighted the role of IP&LCs. Climate solutions without Indigenous Peoples, peasant, and traditional community's involvement are false solutions often promoted by corporate interests. We MUST trust, include, and lean on the expertise of Indigenous Peoples and peasant farmers if we want to see real positive impact in biodiversity, emissions reduction, and perhaps most importantly, the well-being of individuals most heavily affected by climate injustice.
