How do we save the planet? 😅 🌍 Last week, I attended the Collective Impact Summit hosted by PHINEO Startups to try and find out! I watched their Accelerator Pitch Event and heard their fantastic keynote talks on Forests of Tomorrow and Rethinking Forests: Science, Practice, and Policy in Dialogue. Here are my top 3 takeaways that every changemaker should know: 1️⃣ Partnerships are Key to Lasting Change We can’t solve society’s biggest challenges alone. Corporates, NGOs, startups, and investors all need to work together to create meaningful and lasting change. It’s only by leveraging the unique strengths of each sector that we can drive forward solutions that benefit people and the planet. 2️⃣ Funding for Environmental Impact The panel Rethinking Forests: Science and Practice in Dialogue – featuring Dr. Jennifer Schulz, Susanne Roennefarth, Gabriel von dem Bussche, and Ole Seidenberg – highlighted the critical need for patient capital in supporting startups that positively impact nature and the environment. Thoughtful investment is essential to give these initiatives the runway to grow and make a difference. 3️⃣ Strength in Community The Summit showcased the power of a collaborative approach to tackling complex issues, from climate to displacement to democratic resilience. The community atmosphere at Impact Hub Berlin emphasized just how essential collective action is in addressing today’s interconnected crises. 👉 A big thank you to Sebastian Neumann for the great event! 🌍🚀 Grateful for an Inspiring Journey at Hello Tomorrow 2024 in Paris with Dr Ana Novak! Over three days filled with deep conversations, insightful discussions, and inspiring speakers, I had the privilege to connect with European investors and fellow deep tech entrepreneurs who share our passion for combating climate change and preserving biodiversity. One of the most crucial lessons I took away from this event is the urgent need to go beyond carbon in our efforts towards decarbonization. While it's heartening to see many individuals and organizations committed to reducing carbon emissions, it's clear that our collective action must extend to broader environmental concerns. Huge thanks to Mick Liubinskas and Olivia Utharntharm from Climate Salad for orchestrating such a successful Paris trade mission, and to Trade and Investment Queensland, Queensland Chief Entrepreneur, and Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) for their invaluable support. The camaraderie and collaboration among the founders in our cohort were truly remarkable, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to have shared brilliant ideas, delicious French dinners, and memorable moments together. From engaging conversations at our booth to the excitement of pitching night and attending various events, every moment was enriching and enjoyable. To all deeptech startups in Queensland, I wholeheartedly recommend seizing the opportunity to participate in future events like Hello Tomorrow. It's not just a chance to showcase your innovation, but also to connect with like-minded individuals who are driving positive change in the world. Let's continue to push the boundaries of deep tech, champion climate action, and work towards a sustainable future for generations to come. 🌱 Why do early startups need to be part of an ecosystem to succeed? 🌱 I’ll dive into this key question with Adi Mahan from the Incubatenergy program of EPRI and Greg Fleming from the CVC arm of Air Liquide on November 6 in our Palo Alto Office. I firmly believe that corporates, VCs, and accelerator programs are essential to scaling climate tech innovation. 🚀 As Innovation Director, I focus on fostering strategic partnerships between EDF Business Units and startups. While in the US, we don’t offer funding, we provide invaluable experience, expertise, and, most importantly, a chance to become an early customer. 🤝 Corporations play a vital role in supporting startups on their path to success. Yes, collaborating with larger organizations can be challenging due to differing timelines and decision-making processes, but we must recognize that both worlds are distinct yet may benefit to work together.
