Tim Hamers, Secretary General at ERGaR European Renewable Gas Registry aisbl, which is part of the GHG Protocol Technical Working Group on Actions and Market Instruments, explains that in the context of #biomethane, the standard defines how biomethane and biomethane certificates can be used to calculate these emissions: https://bit.ly/3CVUZEJ

Germany's environment agency Umweltbundesamt (UBA) has informed several certification providers that it will begin the process Dec. 2 to officially recognize their Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) certification schemes. The three voluntary certification schemes mentioned are Redcert, ISCC and CertifHY. Until now, the three schemes have only been able to provide provisional certification of the origin of the #energy used in the production of hydrogen, and the carbon footprint of the hydrogen produced. The Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, an organization run by the World Resources Institute and World Business Council for Sustainable Development, launched a consultation last year to update some guidance for its standards for projects to generate renewable energy certificates (RECs). Their draft proposal did not accept biomethane certificates for "book-and-claim" operations through pipelines — in which customers can claim an amount of renewable energy through certificates. Instead, it only allowed physical deliveries to end-users to count towards net neutrality goals. 💡 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗚𝗮𝘀 𝗔𝗰𝘁 💡 Around four weeks ago, news of another pillar of Austria's future climate policy hit the headlines: At the end of February, the Council of Ministers passed the Renewable Gas Act (EGG). The EGG aims to produce 7.5 TWh/a of green gas in Austria in 2030, an ambitious fifty-fold increase on the status quo (0.14 TWh/a). To achieve this, gas suppliers must fulfil percentage green gas quotas, which are penalised with a penalty if not met. Together with the planned compensation payments of EUR 150/MWh, the quotas provide new incentives to expand biogas production and thus to achieve the necessary energy and climate targets. You can see below how high the compensation payments are compared to the current HKN prices for biomethane. Important for biomethane is the dependence on the source substrate: renewable raw materials (so-called NaWaRos) are worth less than biogenic waste. Of interest to industrial companies is the case where biomethane is produced on site and consumed directly. According to E-Control, the following also applies to green gas generated and consumed downstream of the metering point: a green certificate/green gas seal is issued, which can be sold to the energy supplier (up to) the specified compensation amount. This means that self-consumed biomethane can not only reduce the amount of fossil gas purchased, but there is also a bonus of up to EUR 150/MWh. But beware: for the final decision, the law still has to pass the National Council with a 2/3 majority. What is your opinion on the Renewable Gas Act? We look forward to a discussion! #energyindustry #gas #biomethane #inercomp
