I wanted to share some reflections on the PSDI 2024 - 32nd Protein Structure Determination in Industry Meeting, which I attended with my colleague Amandine Gontier, Technical Consultant for NanoTemper Technologies, Team South Europe. I hope this overview isn’t too lengthy for LinkedIn standards 😊 First, the meeting took place in beautiful #Paris. It was an incredible three days with 27 speakers from companies, CROs, and academia, and around 200 attendees, all driven by a passion for science—especially #structuralbiology and #biophysics! The meeting covered a wide range of topics, divided into six sections: 1) Emerging Therapeutic Methods in Drug Discovery. I found @George Petzold’s talk on novel #CRBN neosubstrates and Paraskevi (Evi) Gkeka’s presentation on a new method to identify RNA binding sites especially inspiring. 2) Cryo-EM Advancements in Sample Preparation & Data Processing. Gergely Papp’s work developing EasyGrid to automate #CryoEM sample prep and imaging control was particularly innovative. 3) Challenging Targets: Cryo-EM of Membrane Proteins. Fantastic insights from Christian Löw on solute carriers and Dietmar Weichert on the #GPCR receptor, GPR55. 4) Structural Biophysics. Great to hear how Domainex, represented by Nathan Zaccai, is tackling challenging ion transporters. 5) Structural Biophysics: NMR in Structure-Based Drug Discovery (SBDD). Inspired by @Donald Rieck ’s quest to make NMR faster and cheaper for high-throughput screening and Roberto Maya Martinez’s work on using NMR to identify cryptic pockets. 6) Synergies between AI & Experimental Approaches Casper Goverde presented an exciting approach for designing soluble analogs of integral membrane proteins, while @Arwen Pearson shared how X-ray crystallography will evolve. It was also rewarding to see so many presentations featuring data generated with NanoTemper Technologies’ instruments, including #Prometheus & #Monolith (#nanoDSF, and #MST). Looking forward to the continued innovations in this field, and thanks to the organizers Sonja K., and Tatiana Isabet for having organized this fantastic meeting. See you in #Basel in 2026?
