Can you explain the Pampa project to us? The Pampa project is designed to promote agriculture and cultural associations, and more specifically to demonstrate the value of legumes in intermediate energy crops. The project was completed in 2023. What results have been achieved? It was a programme with 16 partners supported by FranceAgriMer, and the results are of various kinds. Firstly, on the production side, we have shown that the association with legumes is beneficial, particularly when the cropping systems are nitrogen-free. In the absence of nitrogen, a mixture of rye with vetch or rye with broad bean yielded better results than pure rye or pure triticale. This is the first result. The second is that as soon as nitrogen is added, the legume growth is somewhat limited, so we don't increase yield, we're no worse off, but there is less benefit in the combination of nitrogen and legumes. Then there's the plant cover: as soon as legumes are introduced, they are a little wetter, so at harvest time precautions need to be taken: a little more wilting, more time left in the field before harvest to avoid too much moisture. So that's the second result. Then, on the question of the effects on the following crop in terms of nitrogen residues, there isn't much difference. There aren't more nitrogen residues just after harvest, but we have seen some interesting studies on the following crop; perhaps on the effect of root nodules, the value of legumes in the soil or the effects from the association of sunflower or sorghum which was sown afterwards, and which grew slightly better, a little greener�� So it is a question to be studied, even if it's not so simple. So that's the agronomy aspect. On the economic side, when we look at the cost of seeds, the results are a little more modest, since, as I was just saying, once you add nitrogen, there's no gain in yield, so the slightly higher cost of seeds means that the gross margin doesn't change, or is even slightly negative. So this association needs to be viewed a little more globally, in terms of its biodiversity interest, because legumes inherently involve different soil activities, different flowering, vetch in flower, broad beans in flower, which attracts slightly different fauna than rye, which isn't very diverse. As for the soil which I also mentioned, there's also a more general consideration for farming, in particular intermediate energy crops, used to feed the methaniser, but if a farmer sometimes wants to feed the animals, having legumes means the cover will be a little richer in nitrogen and these can be used both for the methaniser and for feeding livestock. All these results are available online, and if you search for ��Pampa�� you'll find the results. We've also produced a flyer with a decision tree to help determine whether or not it's beneficial to plant legumes, with ten or so questions to help decide and thus to diversify these intermediate cover crops for energy purposes.

The nitrogen fixation benefits that come from growing pulse crops are no secret, however a Victorian field trial is looking to delve deeper into the topic, aiming to put some numbers around the legacy effects which eventuate. While it is still too early to determine the legacy effects of various management decisions, there have been a number of significant findings from the 2023 growing season.
