What is the difference between a Project Manager and a Production Supervisor? Sometimes these two roles in industry tend to be confused by somebody who is not familiar with them. In a nutshell, both project managers and production supervisors have significant roles in ensuring organizational success, but their responsibilities are distinct. Production supervisors are responsible for overseeing production facility operations to ensure efficiency, quality, and safety while project managers focus on managing specific projects that achieve defined objectives. In other terms, once the project is defined, and planned, and all resources are in place by the project manager, the production supervisor takes the ball and makes sure that all the daily activities are aligned with the final aim of the project. A manager and the head of engineering discuss a change to a major work package. After the meeting, the manager contacts you and tells you to complete the paperwork to make the change. This is an example of: A-) Management attention to scope management. B-) Management planning. C-) A project expediter position. D-) A change control system.

For effective management of any project or tasks, this must be considered in Planning phase of P-D-C-A cycle. It is directly proportional to Efficiency, Quality & Safety.

As a Project Manager, having an experienced, Supervising Engineer working with you is worth his/her weight in gold. You may be leading the project, but the Supervising Engineer is the running his engineering team and making things happen! A good Supervising Engineer will do the following: 1. Leads his junior engineers, setting priorities, and finding solutions to problems. 2. Understands that Project Schedule and Budget drive and concurrently limit the extent of engineering efforts. 3. Communicates with the Project Manager, candidly informing when more data points are needed or key purchases need to be made. 4. Accepts that a good plan executed with current data now, is better than a perfect plan a month from now with perfect data (when applicable). 5. Coaches and Mentors his junior engineers to become the Supervising Engineers of the future. 6. Builds a relationship of mutual trust among the engineering team and project managers. If you do it right, being a Project Engineer or Project Manager is not like being a Den Mother.

A Project Engineer recently told me that the last thing you should be in construction is… A shrinking violet. We were talking about how to navigate the challenges of being a Project Coordinator on site – and especially feeling like you had to navigate disagreements between key stakeholders. In her years of experience she learnt that speaking up is the only way to earn respect, and to navigate these issues. Know what is best for the project – even if you have to go out and find it. And speak your opinion honestly to all parties. Sweeping concerns under the rug is bad for the project – and can come back at you if things go wrong. Speaking out may be difficult in the moment, but long term, shows you are proactive and can be relied upon to stand up for the good of the project. In the end, these are the Project Coordinators who experience success (and some peace of mind) in the industry. We need people who are candid. Developing a backbone is a crucial part of your professional growth.
